With the Azhar trailer exploding onto the internet, it showed us that this is not your run-of-the-mill biopic. The trailer proved that the film intends to be as controversial and scandalous as Azhar himself and will definitely turn a lot of heads with all the people it points fingers to. Here are 5 people that should be scared stiff by what the movie might reveal about them.
Ravi Shastri: It has been said on numerous occasions that there was bad blood between Ravi and Azharuddin for a long time. Shastri’s numerous affairs earned him the bad boy tag that’s associated with him to this day. Could this promiscuous persona of Shastri be on full display in the film? He is portrayed by one Bollywood’s pretty boys, Gautam Gulati!
Sangeeta Bijlani: Often called the homebreaker, Sangeeta lead the group of ‘WAGS’ wherever the matches took them. Azhar’s relationship with Sangeeta is a classic example of Bollywood and cricket’s affair that continues even to this day. From her kitschy Bollywood films, to cheering Azhar and touring internationally with the team, Bijlani remains a great mystery even today.
The oye oye girl is being played by Nargis, who oozes glam and style! Considering that Salman Khan was an integral part of Sangeeta’s life before Azhar, will we see Salman in the film as well? And if so who will play Salman?
Manoj Prabhakar: Manoj Prabhakar was a key figure in exposing the match fixing scandal. He recorded 40 hours worth of confidential conversations with players, exposing their role in fixing matches. He even accused Kapil Dev of offering him money to throw a game which was later dismissed. Manoj was later accused of match fixing as well and was suspended. His role as whistle-blower led to the unraveling of one of crickets biggest scandals. We wonder if this would be a focus in the movie.
Ajay Jadeja: Ajay Jadeja was one of the biggest cricketers accused of match fixing along with Azhar. However, based on the allegations he was only given a 5 year ban from the sport in contrast to Azhar who was banned for life from the game. Why was Jadeja only given 5 years when Azhar was given a life ban? So, the question is could the film delve deep and uncover what exactly led to this turn of events?
Navjot Singh Sidhu: Navjot Sidhu, whose name also came up as a suspect for match fixing was close to Manoj Prabhakar. Although the allegations were never proved, Prabhakar has said that Sidhu once even showed him a bag of black money that he would show as farm income. He was also later convicted of homicide. Sidhu could really get into a lot of trouble if any new information surfaces with regards to his involvement in the match fixing scandal.
Kapil Dev: Kapil Dev, one of the greatest Indian cricket captains, was also accused of trying to bribe Manoj Prabhakar Rs. 25 lakhs to throw a match against Pakistan. These allegations were met with disbelief from the fans who hated Prabhakar for dragging Kapil Dev’s name into the match fixing scandal. Could the movie Azhar expose information that could cement Prabhakar’s claims thus confirming one of the worst fears for fans of cricket?
The Azhar trailer has given fans a glimpse at the controversy and chaos it could cause when the film releases. It should come as no surprise that people who have secrets that could be brought to light in the movie be in a state of complete panic!
