In a world full of deceptive perceptions, no story is the story – that is the message critically acclaimed director Ritesh Batra wishes to put across as he brings to life the pages of Julian Barnes’ novel ‘The Sense of an Ending’.
The story follows the life of recluse Tony Webster (Jim Broadbent) – a unique combination of self-pity and self-righteousness – who lives his life surrounded by the countless lens of age old Leicas cameras. Like the lens of his second hand cameras, his vision is distorted by his perception of what reality. Owing to this perception Tony carries out a life secluded from his ex-wife (Harriet Walter) and pregnant lesbian daughter – Susie (Michelle Dockery) until one fine day he receives a third eye in the form of a letter from his ex-girlfriend’s deceased mother Sarah (Emily Mortimer). As the story unfolds, Tony is haunted by his past, the suicide of his best friend Adrian (Andrew Buckley) and the mystery which lies behind his estranged relationship with his first love Veronica (Charlotte Rampling).
A truly intense storyteller, The Lunchbox’s director Ritesh Batra dissects the pages of Julian Barnes’ novel with ease as he unravels the layers of this mature mystery. Each layer solves a riddle which brings Tony one step closer to the truth about his past, his shattered relationship with Veronica. The beauty of the film lies in the fact that writer Nick Payne has brought to life Barnes’ characters without altering the very essence of their existence. From the pages of the book to the silver screen, each character intertwines with the next to build a masterfully created web of meaningful emotions and intellect. A treat for the mature audiences, ‘The Sense of Ending’ is a film you won’t want to miss.
