When the trailer was out I was completely in awe for Bollywood’ first horror-comedy, Stree. And it lives up to the expectation.
Stree is basically the story of a haunted village, Chanderi, in Madhya Pradesh. During the 4-day annual village Pooja the men residing there are on high alert as the ghost of a prostitute from the village takes them away leaving behind only their clothes.
Rajkummar Rao essays the role of Vicky – the village’s Manish Malhotra who can tell a woman’s measurement by just looking at her. He is always accompanied by his two besties Bittu and Dana (Aparshakti Khurrana and Abhishek Banerjee respectively). The three friends who originally don’t believe in Stree, get scared when one of them become her prey. In comes Rudra (Pankaj Tiwary), the village’s know-it-all.
Among these four men making her presence know is the unknown woman – Shraddha Kapoor. Who is Stree? What connection does Rajkummar Rao have with her? Is Shraddha Kapoor the ghost, is what the rest of the film consists of.
Directed by Amar Kaushal, the movie is written by Raj and D.K. (of Go Goa Gone and Shor In The City fame). We can say that this beautifully woven story has been brought on screen exceptionally well. The setting is kept as real as possible and won’t make it feel like the characters have been forced to do anything.
The movie has 4 songs with 3 in the first half and 1 during the end credits. And that’s good. Prior to the interval the story is slow and the song help (kinda) to keep you hooked. Do not leave the theatre for too long in the break else you will miss on the chills and craze that will unfold. The second half will leave you at time feeling cold to your bones or catching them laughing at the hilarious one liners.
We give Stree, a hilarious true urban story, 3 stars.
