In recent times, it is rare to find a film which perfectly combines various elements such as comedy, horror, romance, action and adventure. Now comes Stree 2, which sets an example of how to do this and makes a place deep in the audience’s hearts.
In this follow-up to 2018’s Stree, we return to Chanderi to find the town has recovered from the threat of Stree, but the threat has now shifted to the women and this time by a headless ghost who has quite a backstory (we won’t spoil it for you) and ends up abducting women who have progressive mindsets. Once again, Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) has to get into his saviour mode and this time, save the women of Chanderi. His love interest, played by Shraddha Kapoor, returns in her mysterious manner and guides Vicky in this quest. This is the essence of the story.
Now, what makes Stree 2 so good? Well, because it is an all-out entertainer! How they cleverly follow up the events of Stree and Bhediya is just the start of the genius the writers and makers are. At a time when cinematic universes are ruling worldwide, the Maddock Supernatural Universe sure knows how to weave in concepts and characters from its related films, creating immense excitement in the process. While the frightening characters of Stree and Sarkata are indeed jaw-dropping, the comedy is what transforms this story into a compelling and thoroughly entertaining watch.
It is refreshing to see a film with comedy which is consistent throughout, from start to end. This a feat which even films from the traditional comedy genre do not achieve. Adding to the intelligent story and comical ride is the development of the characters, which is a delight to watch. Vicky’s love for Shraddha’s character (there is still no name) has gotten deeper, and you further appreciate the simplicity and genuineness of the person he is. His friends Bittu (Aparshakti Khurana) and Jana (Abhishek Banerjee) are also back, and you will see how some habits never change, but their friendship gets stronger and their adventures, bigger. Rudra Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) is back to impart his gyaan (knowledge), and we finally meet Shama!
No explanation is needed for the brilliant actor Rajkummar Rao, and Stree 2 further cements his place as a versatile actor, and he strongly contributes to making Vicky a character which resonates with the masses. Shraddha Kapoor brings the fierceness and grace her character needs and successfully overcomes the challenges of a mysterious character like this. Abhishek Banerjee makes Jana all the more adorable, and this universe would be incomplete without him. Aparshakti Khurana fuels the right amounts of innocence and swag that Bittu requires, and Pankaj Tripathi can never ever disappoint!
Director Amar Kaushik proves this brilliance yet again as he brings alive a story in the best way one can imagine. His ability to translate imaginative ideas into a film as adventurous and family-friendly as this deserves applause.
Stree 2 is a perfect film to uplift, engage and entertain. This one has repeat value and will leave you waiting for the next adventure for Vicky and the gang.
