Just like the 2014 film Mardaani, Mardaani 2 too deals with problems that are on a high in India. Mardaani 2 follows Police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy as she goes up against a young and ferocious man serial killer who also rapes and brutally murders women.
Director Gopi Puthran sets the mood for the film right from the very first scene. The chilling voice of Sunny (Vishal Jethwa) – a murderer and rapist – breaking the fourth wall and interacting with the audience adds chills right from the start. Inspector Shivani Shivaji Roy (Rani Mukerji) is just transferred to Kota, Rajasthan where during a Dussehra celebration a young feisty girl is abducted and then raped and murdered by a cynical and creepy as hell Sunny. The movie follows what happens when Shivani challenges to drag Sunny to court by the collar and he is hell-bent on proving her wrong and defeating her.
Kudos to Gopi Puthran for the well written and beautifully executed film.
He does justice to the film and repeatedly stressed the point of gender inequality and bias prevalent in the country. The director gives us glimpses into Sunny’s troubled past but doesn’t make you feel sympathetic towards him.
Vishal just makes you hate him from the moment you see him in the film. He is young and has a fetish for raping women he feels are trying to dominate men and make a mark for themselves. Rani as Shivani is tough but has a heart of compassion. She balances her act well between being powerful & stern and vulnerable at the same time.
The supporting cast does a good job overall – but you cannot take your eyes off the protagonist and antagonist. They are simply wow!
The film doesn’t have songs so there are no disturbances or breaks in the tone of the film. The background score is subtle and adds to the look and feel of the scenes. The cinematography is good and will take you to Kota. Both the first and second halves of the film are equally intriguing.
Sunny’s character is shown way too smart on some accounts and it may seem unrealistic. Also, the film kinds of stereotype its male characters and portrays almost all of them as misogynistic and insensitive towards women.
During this time when every day there are a number of rape cases coming to light, Mardaani 2 shouldn’t be missed. We give this gripping Rani Mukerji starrer 4 stars.
