IT Chapter Two picks up twenty-seven years after the original film – when the ‘Losers’ defeated Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård).
The Losers are now all grown and have moved on in their lives and away from Derry. They are called back to Derry by Mike – the only one who remained in their hometown – when children start disappearing announcing the arrival of the evil clown.
The adult Losers decide to end Pennywise’s threat once and for all but are they brave. They need to make sacrifices to defeat him but are they ready to face the fears they have buried deep and forgotten? That’s what the movie talks about.
IT Chapter 2 is a nice film, with fun, horror and suspense but is also a step down from the originality of the first installment. If you are a horror film fan and were invested in the first film, you will be entertained but disappointed by the nature of the scares.
Andy Muschietti’s direction is on spot and it’s nice to see such a big-budget horror film ($60–70 million). The casting of the adult Losers Club deserves major praises. Kudos to the casting as the adults not just have the looks, but the mannerisms as well that make it seems like the same actor played both roles!
James McAvoy as Bill Denbrough and Bill Hader as Richie Tozier are a delight to watch. Jessica Chastain, Jay Ryan, Isaiah Mustafa, James Ransone and Andy Bean to do a good job.
What doesn’t work for the film is its runtime – 2hours 49minutes.
Yes, IT Chapter Two is pretty long and with the recurring nature of the character dynamics and scenes, it seems stretched. The second half is full of jump scares. It features individual scenes of every character in different ages facing the same threat. It works fine at the start but gets stale real fast as the element of surprise is lost.
The actors do a good job but the characters are poorly written. Bill Skarsgard has little time around as he is mostly under CGI.
This movie isn’t a bad film but it still falls under the sequel curse.
