Do you remember embarking on an adventure every Sunday morning with Dora and her talking monkey, backpack, map and friends? Well, Dora and the Lost City of Gold is based on Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer.
The film follows Dora (Isabela Moner) and her journey from living in the jungle all her life to the city where she meets new people. It shows her adventure when she, her cousin Diago Diego (Jeff Wahlberg) and her new high school friends (Madeleine Madden & Nicholas Coombe) embark on an adventurous – not deliberate – journey into the jungle.
The high-schoolers are kidnapped by mercenaries in pursuit of Dora’s parents and the hidden golden city. They are freed by Alejandro (Eugenio Derbez), another academic who provides accompanies the group into the jungle on their adventure. In the jungle they meet Dora’s pet monkey, Boots and evade Swiper the fox who is working with the mercenaries. What happens in the jungle and then after is what makes up the rest of the film.
Isabela portrays the vulnerability of Dora earnestly. At times she will even make you feel her plight. The other high school student do their part well in showing the terror any high-schooler goes through. The other actors to do a decent job. The naïve-ness of Dora will put a smile on your face as well as make you facepalm.
But this film is not meant for teenagers or those over 20years. The film is for either the kids who are currently hooked to the animated version or for those who are all set to enter the world of ‘high school’. The patent of Dora asking viewers to repeat after her will make you cringe – and we aren’t the only guys who feel it. We all know Dora loves singing though the songs are in sync with her character it can get a little too much if you don’t like them.
We give this film 2.5 stars for this journey down memory lanes.
