Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation are here with the fourth installment of Toy Story. The series that began in 1995 dwells on the anthropomorphic concept that all toys are secretly alive. The films focus on a classic cowboy — Sheriff Woody (Tom Hanks), modern spaceman action figure — Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and a bunch of other toys in the possession of Andy and his sister Molly.
Toy Story 4 begins with a flashback where Molly’s toys — including Bo Peep (Annie Potts), a sweet-natured shepherdess accompanied by a single figure of three sheep — are given away. In the same flashback, it is shown how Woody sacrifices his love for Bo by staying loyal as Andy’s toy. It then continues on how Woody, Buzz and the other toys belonging to Andy adjust to a life with Bonnie and her toys.
Toy Story 4 introduces a new toy in Bonnie’s life — Forky (Tony Hale), a wealth from waste toy Bonnie made during her kindergarten orientation. With Forky, you get to see how loyal a toy Woody is and the length to which he will go to keep his kid happy.
The film follows the adventures of Woody, Forky, Buzz and Bo Peep while Bonnie and her family go on a road trip. It’s here where the friends reunite and meet the film’s grey toy — Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) and her henchmen the Bensons.
A lot of screen time is given to Woody, the adventurous Peep and the new lost toys including Ducky and Bunny (Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele), Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves ) and Giggle McDimple (Ally Maki). While the old characters like Buzz, Jessie, the potato heads, Rex don’t get much exposure – the new toys make up for it.
This installment is sweet and full of humour, emotions and most importantly a great story. The story while it will make you cry has a lot to teach you too about friendship and love. It beautifully shows you the phases a toy goes through when a kid leaves them or they don’t receive their love.
The film shows real character development of Woody. The plot is on point with writing that is funny and full of emotions. The actors do a good job in the voice overs as well. The end is what adds meaning to Woody’s life but it is sad. We would really love to see another film where all toys – old and new – embark on another adventure.
We give Toy Stories 4, 3.5 stars for the amazing film they have given us and urge all Toy Story fans to watch it.
