While in conversation with UrbanAsian, singer Shannon K opens up about her latest hit ‘I Do’, about father Kumar Sanu, working with Sonu Nigam, Himesh Reshammiya, about future projects and more.
1. Your song ‘I Do’ has been a hit, it is loveed by fans and has crossed millions of views. How are you feeling after receiving so much love?
It’s such an overwhelming feeling when reviving so much love from all my fans for my songs and honestly it just motivates me to do even better next time. I’m extremely grateful and thankful for my fans who’ve always loved and appreciated my songs. I wouldn’t have been here if it wasn’t for my fans.
2. How did it all start? How did the idea of this track come out?
My last songs have been all about the bitter memories but this one is unique because this song is about wanting the best for an ex and that you’re sorry for the way that you treated that person. When you’re in a relationship, it’s never just one persons fault so this song is a way of saying that I understand that now. That’s how the idea of I Do came about.
3. Also, in the past you have sung many independent hit singles. What inspires you the most in creating such great tracks?
My inspiration is usually either my surroundings or something that occurred in my personal life which I want to share it with people. I think God has chosen me and given me the voice and ability to write music so I should always give my best to create the best and help people with my songs.
4. You have a great legacy as your father Kumar Sanu is a legendary singer. So is there any pressure or responsibility you feel you have on your shoulders?
There’s not a single day where I haven’t felt the pressure of living up to my dad’s legacy or living up to people’s expectations. I knew the moment I’d start my music career everyone would have their eyes on me to make their judgment, but I get told by dad that I’m climbing up the ladder step by step, doing well and succeeding which is why I shouldn’t let the pressure affect me. Somewhere at the back of my mind I’d always be reminded of the legacy that I gotta keep up to, however that pressure will always keep me in the right direction and will help me know where I want to be.
5. Before entering into the music world what tips did you receive from your father?
My father usually advices me to have perseverance and patience because that is the key along with hard work and a positive attitude. He warned me about the kinds of people who’d come across my path and try to put me down and see me fail and would discourage me but i have to keep going forward and not care about the haters. He told me about all the challenges that I’d have to face but during those times I have to Stay focused and always try to do better than before. Never give up on myself. Always be humble and down to earth.
6. In future are you willing to work in Bollywood or is there any ‘Hindi’ song that you would come up with?
I would certainly love to sing in Hindi when I would get an opportunity to do so. As of for right now I don’t really have a specific plan, though I love bollywood and have been fascinated by the Bollywood movies. It’s my utmost dream to be the voice for two of my very favorite actresses, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Deepika Padukone. Till then I shall work on my Hindi pronunciation.
7. For Bollywood you have worked with two great singers Sonu Nigam and Himesh Reshammiya. How was your experience working with them?
It was an entirely new experience working in Bollywood. It was super fun working with Mr Himesh Reshammiya, he’s an amazing producer and all his songs are absolutely phenomenal! He treated me as a kid and was super sweet. One thing I really liked was that none of them had an attitude, as a matter of fact they were extremely humble and down to earth. Mr Sonu Nigam understood the style of music which I had and didn’t try to change it instead he adapted the style and approached it in his own unique way. He’s an incredible artist and it was such a privilege working with him. I got to learn a lot during the process of working with both, Mr Reshammiya and Mr Nigam.
8. You have also sung for Bollywood and even your independent singles are hits. As a singer, what is the difference you feel when you have to sing for a bollywood track or an independent single?
I’d say there are few differences such as
For Bollywood you have to understand what the composer’s vision is and try to deliver that with a touch of my own creative thoughts too. It’s interesting to be in someone else’s shoe and interpret it in my own words. As for independent music, I write the song according to my personal experience or surroundings that have inspired me to write about. After I’ve gotten down the mood of my song I get into the studio and start building the music according to the vibe I’m getting off of the song and once the music making is complete I head over to record my voice. Both the sides are are just as creative as the other in their own way which is why I love working because it not only challenges me but improves me as an artist.
9. Being a singer of the 21st century what do you think are the advantages and disadvantages?
The advantages are that there are platforms to release your music on and you can use social media to reach out to people and share your music. The disadvantage is that there are so many real artists being overshadowed by people who don’t have any particular talent yet they step into the spotlight because they fought with someone or did something controversial. Controversy overpowers talent. Another disadvantage is that even the most successful and famous artists need the support of a label. Independent artists can do everything in their power to get their music on a bigger platform but unless they have a label, it doesn’t matter if they have a lot of talent, they’re still not going to be as successful.
10. What are your future projects?
I recently sang three songs for a web series for Zee5 titled “The Casino”. So I’m really excited to see my fans reaction to hear more bollywood songs from me!
Along with that I have a new single which will hopefully come out this year and it’s titled “Knock Knock”.
For the video I went down to Jaipur and filmed at the beautiful Mundota Palace and Fort and wore this traditional outfit so I’m really looking forward to it!
