New York Fashion Week Recap – NYFW 2020
New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is always one of the hottest fashion weeks of them all. From star-studded FROW’s (that’s Front Row for all you fashion newbie’s) filled with celebrities and influencers including the likes of Miley Cyrus, Henry Golding, Supermodels Gigi & Bella Hadid, Joan Smalls & Amber Valletta.
The eponymous American super brand that is Ralph Lauren kicked off their ready to wear FW19 show in the infamous Ralph’s club. A fanciful affair with everyone dressed to the nine’s in black tie. Singer Janelle Monae provided the entertainment for the evening and my my, what a jaw-dropping performance she gave. The incredible collection showcased evening wear for ladies that scream luxury. Suitable for debutants, balls, gala’s alike. Moreover, black, gold and white were worked across a variety of suit jackets, evening gowns, tops and trousers that were tailored to perfection, gold accessories were carefully integrated into the models looks as they waltzed along the runway. Whether it was earrings, gold buckled skinny belts or statement art-deco earrings. Overall the collection emulated glamour and extravagance in a way that Ralph countlessly knows how to portray.
TOM FORD who recently took over the helm at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) from the great Dianne Von Furstenberg (DVF) presented his SS20 collection in a New York Subway. Set on the derelict Bowery platform of the J/Z line, the collection was shown in the most stylish way possible. After all, it is TOM FORD we are talking about! Silk, leather and suede sprawled the runway. Both in the women’s and men’s ready to wear looks. Hues of blue, pink, white, red, black and purple featured. Even the use of alligator made the runway debut and each look was perfectly constructed as if an angel had put it together himself. The runway is set in the subway echoed his collection, oh-so SEXY, STYLISH & SENSUAL now think of that next time you’re on the hot and sweaty New York subway.
Oscar de la Renta debuted a magical line up for their SS20 collection. Silk-taffeta ruled the runway. Models were dolled up in the cleanest, glowing beauty I had ever seen. It was as if each of the models had taken a 3-month vacation. The collection drew inspiration from their founder’s Latin American roots, the set itself exemplified this. Set in The Cunard Building, large straw-like baskets filled with a rainbow of tropical fruit was carefully placed amongst the potted plants that gave the room a very tropical vibe. Beautiful gowns were shown with intricate details, the collection was reminiscent of a faraway tropical Caribbean island. Bravo Laura Kim & Fernando Garcia who are the co-creative directors of the house; elegance is defiantly an attitude.
Brandon Maxwell’s SS20 show had a pastel pink runway where models like Irina Shayk, Cindy Bruna and India’s very own Bhumika Arora walked the runway. A meticulously presented collection that focused on soft hues of pastel baby blue, pink and mocha were heavily incorporated into the tailoring, evening dresses and menswear. Additionally, statement accessories were predominant with models wearing either chain like earrings or necklaces designed in collaboration with Kenneth Jay Love Jewellery was the icing on the cake. Not to mention the runway room which, was scented with Frederic Malle’s Portrait of A Lady. A complex fragrance that captures exactly that. What an ingenious way to captivate your audience. Memorable through a scent that captures the collection perfectly!
NYFW Honorary Mentions
Other notable honorary mentions include Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty show. For instance, a brand that represents inclusivity as quoted by Rihanna, “Breaking all the barriers”, was shown during NYFW. As fashions elite made their way to see the show, they were stripped of all social media. This was due to the collection only being shown through Amazon prime, dropping September 20th. Celebrities who attended were Rhianna’s nearest and dearest everyone from DJ Khaled to Migos, rapper Sawatiee and supermodel Cara Delevingne attended. Uptown, ALEXANDER WANG collaborated with Bulgari, celebrating his take on the famous Serpenti bag, iconic to the house of Bulgari. The party had an 80’s vibe and took place inside the former Henri Bendel. Yes…that’s right, will all the Gossip Girl fans please stand up?! The same place where Serena, Blair and Little J shopped, we wish we would have got an invite to that one.
