Aishwarya Rai in Michael Cinco
It was THE fashion moment of 2017, not only at Cannes, but perhaps the world over. It was the icy blue Cinderella gown that shut down the red carpet on the French Riviera, which is not an easy feat at a place known for its style and glamour. A splendid creation on its own, only the Most Beautiful Woman in the World could fully do justice to this Michael Cinco gown. Aish walked the red carpet like she owned it…and after over 15 years at Cannes, she practically does. Minimal makeup, sleek, straight hair, and almost no accessories let the magnificent gown speak for itself. And what did it say? The Queen has arrived!
Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren
Ah, the Met Gala…a tricky, themed fashion event where you’re expected to go crazy, but never look crazy. This year honored Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garçons who is known for, among other things, her famous jackets and her experimentation with proportions. With that in mind, Priyanka’s dramatic Ralph Lauren trench gown (with detachable train!) was perfectly on-theme. Our Desi Girl knocked this one out of the park!
Sonam Kapoor in Elie Saab Couture
Bollywood’s favorite fashionista Sonam Kapoor began her tenure on the Cannes red carpet in this stunning baby pink Elie Saab creation. A wispy updo framed that perfect face, while she paid tribute to her Indian roots by wearing custom-made Kalyan jewelry.
Deepika Padukone in Prabal Gurung
This is what it means to dress perfectly on-brand. Deepika Padukone is sporty, strong, svelte, and the picture of health, and her styling here reflects that. She’s had some fashion hiccups of late, but she seemed to find her groove on the XXX: Return of Xander Cage promotional tour, and this look in particular stood out as one of her best of the year.
Mahira Khan in Nicolas Jebran Couture
Pakistani actress Mahira Khan was constantly in the headlines this year, whether it was for her controversial presence in the Shahrukh Khan-starrer Raees or her international romance with Ranbir Kapoor. One thing that was tragically overlooked was this appearance at the Beirut International Awards Festival, where she served elegance in spades in a voluminous white gown with a floral train by Lebanese designer Nicolas Jebran.
Ileana D’Cruz in Osman
Ileana D’Cruz is an unsung fashionista, consistently delivering well-styled looks at every turn. But this Osman suit was a standout this year, rounded out with Christian Louboutin heels, a deep red lipstick, and her hair pulled back in a structured ponytail. It just goes to show that there’s still nothing sexier than a woman in a well-tailored suit!
Priyanka Chopra in Fausto Puglisi
While this look was, I’m sure, a divisive one, it was love at first sight for me! Priyanka Chopra wore this Fausto Puglisi floral mini with matching boots to the Global Citizen Festival in New York City. With beachy waves and a pair of shades, PC was the definition of a youthfulness that screamed, “I don’t give a damn!” Will this look withstand the test of time? Maybe not, but it was absolutely perfect for the event, and Priyanka rocked the hell out of it!
Sonam Kapoor in Fouad Sarkis
Imagine Betty Draper showing up to an event after a particularly satisfying last-minute romp in bed. That’s the look Sonam Kapoor was serving in this voluminous emerald green Fouad Sarkis gown. Let’s be clear about one thing: no one could have pulled off this look the way Sonam did. But she leaned into the drama of it, pairing it with bright red lips and a messy faux-bob, leaving us with the image of a sexed-up 50’s housewife we couldn’t help but love.
Alia Bhatt in Zuhair Murad Couture
For IIFA 2017, Alia opted for this shimmery Zuhair Murad gown, the color of which changed depending on which way the light hit it. A sleek bun and smokey eye rounded out her look. It was youthful, edgy, and fun, and Alia looked luminous in it…literally!
Malaika Arora in Falguni and Shane Peacock
Malaika Arora is someone who frequently walks the line between sexy and tacky, sometimes landing on the wrong side of it. But she struck the perfect balance here, attending a wedding in this silver beaded Falguni and Shane Peacock gown. In typical Malaika style, she sported a sexy thigh-high slit, but her understated styling kept this gorgeous gown looking glamorous instead of gaudy. More, please!
