Happy Singles Awareness Day: 5 reasons why being single rocks!

For those of you suffering from a Valentine’s Day hangover, here’s a remedy: Singles Awareness Day!

Sure, being in love is great, but being unattached can actually be pretty amazing as well. So don’t let the sickeningly sweet couples get you down this Valentine’s Day! Here are five reasons why being single is awesome.

1. You don’t have to answer to anyone!

You want to go out clubbing? Do it! You want to see an obscure foreign film absolutely no one else is interested in? Go for it! You want to spend all night in a onesie scrolling through cat memes on the internet? There’s no one stopping you! The world is your oyster!

The best thing about being single is that you get to do exactly what you want to do. There’s no one you have to dress up for, there’s no one whose calls and texts you have to answer immediately. You are free to live life without making any compromises. And total freedom is something everyone should experience at least once in their adult life; it helps you get to know yourself better, so that when you do find someone you want to spend your time with, you already know what kind of lifestyle makes you happy.

2. You get to flirt with whoever you want, anytime you want!

Flirting is one of life’s most basic pleasures, but often, jealous significant others can get in the way. When you’re single, you don’t have to worry about all the messiness that harmless flirting can bring to a relationship. And let’s be honest, successful flirting can make you feel pretty damn good about yourself!

3. You don’t have to deal with his friends…his family…his hairy dog who sheds all over your clothes…

At the beginning of any new relationship, you’ll quickly find that your significant other already has an established group of people he surrounds himself with, and if you two are going to have a snowball’s chance in hell of making it work, you’ve got to spend time with the people he likes. And often, that’s easier said than done…especially if his dear, sweet mother is actually a total nightmare and his friends are obnoxious and smell a bit funny.

Ultimately, it’s hard fitting yourself in to someone else’s life! But when you’re single, you don’t have to worry about any of that. No awkward Sunday dinners with in-laws, no forced friendships with people your S.O. was close to before he or she met you. Being single means you get to surround yourself with the people you love the most, 100% of the time. No compromises!

4. You have more time to spend with YOUR friends

Whenever you get into a relationship, your friendships tend to fall by the wayside. Your pals might tell you this doesn’t bother them, but that is a total lie. Your friends miss you! They want to hang out with you! And if we’re all being honest, when you take sex out of the equation, most of us would rather spend time with our BFFs than our significant others, anyway.

When you’re single, you realize that sometimes, the real love of your life isn’t a romantic partner, but a best friend. Boyfriends and girlfriends will let you down, but your BFFs are the ones who are there to pick you back up again. (Usually with the help of vodka and Ben & Jerry’s!)

5. You have time to fall in love…with yourself!

The acronym for Singles Awareness Day might be S.A.D., but there’s nothing sad about genuinely enjoying your own company. Just because you’re alone, it doesn’t mean you have to be lonely. You are your only constant companion in life, so if you don’t love yourself, no one else is going to be able to fill that void. You’re awesome, and there’s nothing wrong with admitting it!
