DEFINITION PLEASE: Written and Directed by Sujata Day . Starring: Sujata Day, Ritesh Rajan, Jake Choi. It’s been 15 years since Monica Chowdry won the national Spelling Bee, and life hasn’t quite panned out as expected for the young champion. When her estranged older brother returns home to help care for their sick mother, the siblings must find a way to reconcile in this late bloomer coming-of-age family dramedy.

Definition Please is the feature directorial debut by Sujata Day (HBO’s Insecure), who also wrote the script, produced the project and stars as Monica. Concurrent with the trailer and key art release, the film will have its world premiere at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival in August.

Having a seat at the table

“Hollywood is currently in a state of major upheaval as creators of color call out its broken systems which leave us out of the game,” Day says. “I wrote, produced, directed, and starred in my film because traditional Hollywood left me no other choice. No one in Hollywood was willing to take a chance on me, so I took a chance on myself. Instead of waiting for an invite to that elusive seat at the table, I built my own table.”

Day is joined on screen by Ritesh Rajan (Russian Doll, Disney’s The Jungle Book), Jake Choi (Single Parents, The Sun Is Also A Star) and Anna Khaja (Silicon Valley, The Good Place). Supporting cast includes Lalaine, LeVar Burton, Katrina Bowden, Eugene Byrd, Parvesh Cheena, Sonal Shah, Tim Chiou, Kunal Dudheker, Meera Simhan, and Maya Kapoor.
