Republic Day is celebrated with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm on January 26 to honour the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect. This year, we will be celebrating the 70th Republic Day.

On this day, a parade is organized from Rajpath to Red Fort that showcases India’s culture, heritage and defense capabilities. It is held in the capital, New Delhi and is organized by the Ministry of Defence.

From 1950-54, Republic Day was celebrated at Irwin Stadium (now called National Stadium), Red Fort, Ramlila Grounds and Kingsway. It was first celebrated at Rajghat in 1955.

On the eve of Republic Day, the President of India distributes Padma Awards to the civilians of India every year. These are the second-highest civilian awards in India after Bharat Ratna.

These awards are given in three categories, viz. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, in decreasing order of importance.
