The Master, Reena Mathur behind ReeMat Designs

Reena Mathur, the founder and creative brain behind ReeMat designs shared some exciting views on her amazing designs. Not only is Reena a designer, she hold a Masters and Bachelors degree! Talk about a woman with a purpose! Reena has a Masters Degree from Stanford University in Civil Engineering and a Bachelors in Civil Engineering from India. Above all, Reena has always had an interest in the fashion industry and similarly, custom statement jewelery!
We had the pleasure of sharing some insight on ReeMat designs and the phenomenal woman behind it, Reena Mathur. This is what Reena shared with us:

Handcrafted statement jewelry expert! Tell us a bit more about the Reena behind ReeMat Designs!
Holding two degrees, one being Masters and the other Bachelors. Reena worked in the Bay Area for several years. She and her husband moved to the East Coast where she worked on many projects for the city of New York. Reena had an interest in the fashion industry.
Being a full-time mother, Reena probably juggled almost all of her passion and family life. She started designing custom statement jewelery. Made for friends and family. Materials that Reena used were semi precious stones, wood, kundan and even paper. Reena works on her own designs and as a result teamed up with design workshops in India!

When was ReeMat Designs established and what motivated you towards handcrafted jewelry?
I come from a family of engineers and was raised in Mumbai. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Bombay University. After working in the Bay Area for several years, my husband and I moved to the east coast where I worked on various construction projects for the city of New York. Priorities soon changed and mommy mode took over. In addition to our two kids, building our new home became a full time project and our “third baby”.
Growing up in the eighties in India, your career choices were pretty clear…..if you were academically bright, you either became a doctor or an engineer. So I finally decided to break the mold and in between being a full time mom, I started designing and curating custom statement jewelry pieces for myself, working with friends in India. It was something very creative and very satisfying. Soon, I found myself designing and curating for friends and family. Their encouragement led me to launch ReeMat Designs.
This journey has resulted into some amazing friendships with women entrepreneurs who have taught me so much and who have celebrated me and my little successes very step of the way.

What would you say is your favorite thing about Handcrafted jewelry and why? What do you enjoy most about it?
My favorite thing about handcrafted jewelry is the wide diversity that it allows in designs. Pieces are handcrafted which means a lot of freedom in crafting various designs. It also gives me an opportunity to work with some amazing artists. What I enjoy most is meeting interesting people daily from all walks of life and learning so much from all of them.

Could you explain the inspiration behind the statement jewelry and the materials you usually use?
“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.”
Statement jewelry pieces are handcrafted by artisans in India and designed or curated by ReeMat Designs. These works of art are crafted using various materials including semi-precious stones, pearls, wood, kundan (indian gemstone), and even recycled paper! Contemporary combined with classic. Our mantra is “Jewelry with a Cause”, so we donate to charitable causes while we grow.

What do you think makes ReeMat Designs unique as it combines the Eastern and Western world?
We try hard to make sure our designs work well with the current global melting pot that we live in. Likewise, our designs are day to evening wear for the working woman. The bride is kept modern with crafted statement Legacy pieces. There is something for each and every one in our diverse collection. That’s what makes us unique.
