Anita Dongre is an Indian fashion designer and is the founder of House of Anita Dongre, an Indian fashion house. She was born and raised in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Her designs are available under four distinct brands, which are AND (Western wear), Global Desi (ethnic wear), Anita Dongre (bridal, couture prêt, menswear), and Anita Dongre Grassroot (organic clothes). Along with couture brands, she launched her jewelry brand Anita Dongre Pink City, which also features under House of Anita Dongre.

Tell us about your brand Anita Dongre.
My brand ‘Anita Dongre’ has always been a reflection of the woman of today and what she seeks. My design evolution has always paralleled hers, putting wearability and effortless grace in focus. ‘Grassroot’ was as born out of the need to provide steady opportunities to India’s skilled artisan communities, translating heirloom traditions from the heart of Indian villages into contemporary, sustainable fashion.

What made you decide to launch your store in New York?
I’ve always loved the multicultural vibe of New York City and its inherent sense of fashion. Brides usually have to take the long journey to India to visit my store, but now they can get it right where they are.

Who is your style icon?
My grandmother for her grace and charm.

If Anita were not a fashion designer, she would be…
I love children and would want to be a teacher.

How would you describe satisfaction in work and the product delivered?
I love fashion, which for me is also an emotion. My true satisfaction comes when I see women feeling good about themselves when they wear my labels. This is what I started out to do, something I believe in even today and keeps me motivated immensely.

What percentage do you give for family, work, and socialization out of 100%?
I am someone who feels that when you love your work, it’s never too much. That being said, after a day full of meetings and brainstorming sessions, my evenings are reserved for dinner with family and some playtime with my dog.

Do you ever get free time? What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
I love to start the day with a nice long walk, watching the sunrise. I am at my desk by 9 am and I delve into work that takes up my entire day. It’s a blessing that my design space is nestled against green hills and a picturesque view. All my holidays are spent in wildlife sanctuaries. It re-energizes and invigorates me. Birds and nature completely relax me.

What was the most challenging task you have ever accepted?
Work and life throw every day at you every day, some are big and some are small. One has to simply learn how to overcome them.
