I finally made it to the movies today after spending an exciting weekend with some b-town personalities on the IIFA Green Carpet! But I have to say, the wait was worth it and I am so glad I was able to catch Jaaga Jasoos on the big screen tonight.
It was tough refraining myself from reading headlines about the film since it released last Friday and as always, while everyone else did not enjoy the film much, I was fully engaged in this world of Anurag Basu once again within the first five minutes to the end. Anurag has this knack of how to tell a story visually and emotionally through an insane amount of expressions.
Jaaga Jasoos is an adventure film which takes you on the journey of solving mystery after mystery and subtle hints of comedy, a pinch of bittersweetness and a large amount of outstanding cinematography. There were three things about this film which kept me on the edge from start to finish.
One being the story. Sometimes when making a film, filmmakers get lost in how to structure the story and execute it. In this film, there was an entire map built out to tell this story so eloquently and seamlessly felt easy to the eye while watching. The second aspect was Ranbir Kapoor as Jaaga. There is no doubt he carries the Kapoor genes well and if not has exceeded what his family has showcased on-screen in the past. Ranbir has proven various times that acting is not just being able to deliver dialogue, but being able to express through body movement, facial expression and most importantly your eyes. Of course, a lot of this credit goes to the director, Anurag Basu. And lastly the music of the film. Pritam has proven once again through this musical masterpiece film that there sure is a difference between a ‘musical’ and ‘Indian Cinema’ and he was able to capture both angles in one piece. I can’t stop listening to tracks like Galti Se Mistake, Phir Wahi, and Ullu Ka Patha!
Katrina Kaif was a perfect fit for Shruti Sen Gupta. In fact, I can’t see any other actress in the industry playing this part. The body chemistry between Ranbir and Katrina is something hardly anyone else could pull off, and her characters clumsy personality definitely brought a comical angle to the film.
From a filmmaking aspect, I can totally see why the film took three years to piece together, and I am so glad Anurag Basu has introduced a new type of artwork into the industry. I felt shades of Tin Tin and Indian Jones here and there, but regardless the film felt original and extremely organic to watch on-screen.
