The soulful singer and ghazal maestro, Jagjit Singh, was known for the emotion he could elicit in any lyric. He had a rare voice and talent. So, not many attempts to cover his songs as they too would need to have mastery over infusing emotion into each word. Luckily for us, singer Shweta Subram, who is also known for her soulful voice has just that sort of talent. Shweta recently decided to pay a tribute to Jagjit Singh, whom we lost 5 years ago, to honor him for the gifts that he has given to the world. To do so, Shweta decided to create her own rendition of one of his most popular numbers “Hothon Se Chhu Lo Tum.” The track does justice to the original and gives it a more modern feel at the same time.
Shweta teamed up with talented musicians from the United States who she met at a local event. She shared that she is happy to have worked with Vivek Menon on guitars and violin, Maxx Bradley on keys and John Baldwin on drums and says there’s more lot more to come. The video was short in the outskirts of the beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina. She adds,
“It’s amazing how we met, jammed and next thing we are in studio recording.”
Shweta’s journey started after she won the title of Best Singer in North America by Sangam Kala group. After that, she has appeared on Indian television shows, and even at the IIFA Awards alongside Salim-Sulaimain in 2011. Shweta debuted as a playback singer in Bollywood alongside Ayushmann Khurrana with the song, “Dil-e-Nadaan” in the movie Hawaizaada. She also lent her voice for a Star Plus soap opera, Tere Sheher Mein.
Besides her contributions to the world of Indian entertainment, Shweta has collaborated with musicians in the West. She was contacted by The Piano Guys to create an Indian adaptation of Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child, which has crossed 12 million views on YouTube. In addition, she has collaborated with Shankar Tucker for an original, “Mere Saajan Sun Sun”.
Shweta was was chosen to perform the Indian and Canadian National Anthems for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reception in Toronto. She is also the youngest vocalist of Indian origin to have performed at the esteemed Carnegie Hall in New York!
