Musician and singer Shefali Das, who also goes by Shefs Kiss, opens up about her new upcoming singles, and performing with her band at gigs across the tri-state area in the U.S., while also juggling completing her PhD from Yale, in which she just finished her second year.

Das started getting involved in the arts at a young age, as her parents encouraged her to do classical dance, piano and singing when she was a child. This ignited a passion in Das as she realized how much she enjoyed being a performer, even though she was a bit self-conscious on stage.
As she continued to perform and grow as an artist, especially throughout college, Das started performing with her band, and found a group of musicians she felt like she could really connect with.
“It’s a lot of trust onstage, and I know that if we go off-key, we will find our way back. It’s technical trust and emotional trust too. I love the guys that I play with dearly, and I’ve been playing with them for a minute.”

Even though Das can accompany herself, she explains that she would rather be playing with her band, because it gives her “great comfort to be on stage with her people.”
“Music is the one space in my life where I don’t feel socially anxious. I will get up onstage or in a recording studio, and I know I will be fine, and the moment I leave, consciousness comes back.”
Das’s upcoming single ‘Honey’ is releasing in July, and another one in September, and she explains how the recording process works, especially since she just started with a new vocal coach, Glenn Allen.
She went on to share the love she has for both the recording studio and the stage, because of the support of her band.
“We come in, and I just love working with them. They come in and they challenge me, and we’re pushing back on each other, and we’re trying new things from the ground up.”
Das describes her single as “indie-rock female rage”, which comes from her childhood of listening to classic rock and mo-town.
