On the occasion of International Men’s Day, we caught up with Shivam Khajuria, who plays Prem in the popular show Anupamaa. Known for bringing depth and sincerity to his character, Shivam opens up about what the day means to him, how perceptions of masculinity are evolving, and the fine balance between chasing one’s dreams and meeting societal expectations.
A central theme this year for International Men’s Day is “Celebrating Men and Boys.” What does this tagline mean to you?
For me, it’s simple — no matter how grown-up we all pretend to be, the little boy inside us is still very much alive. He’s the one who keeps us curious, goofy, excited, and a little mischievous. I think that inner boy deserves some celebration too. Life gets serious fast, so holding on to that innocence and joy makes the journey a lot more fun.
In this year’s Star Parivaar Awards, you gracefully took on a female avatar and succeeded in it. In a broader context, how has your idea of masculinity evolved over the years?
Honestly, the more I grow, the more I realize masculinity isn’t about being tough 24/7. Real masculinity is actually about being comfortable in your own skin. If that means tapping into your feminine side, being expressive, or dressing up for a performance — why not? I think confidence is the most masculine thing a man can wear. Everything else is just noise.
In Anupamaa, Prem wanted to become a chef but was held back by his father’s reluctance and family duties. What advice do you have for young men in similar situations?
Look, society always has an opinion — that’s its full-time job. But society isn’t going to build your future for you. If something genuinely makes you happy, chase it. Dream boldly, work hard, and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty for choosing your own path. Life is too long to do something you don’t love, and too short to spend worrying about who’s judging you.
