Actor Sid Makkar known for his mark across platforms of web, film, and television was recently seen in Bollywood’s most recent success, Saiyaara. He chats about the film, how he earned his role, and shares his thoughts on how cinema has changed.

Whats been keeping you busy?

Currently handling my phone. Flooded with congratulatory messages & calls from all over. I’ve worked as an actor for over 15 years, done bigger & better parts, but never this response. It’s the power of ‘Saiyaara’ , a Bollywood blockbuster film!

The phenomenal response to Saiyaara – did you expect it and what made you say yes to the film?

When I got the film, after 3 rounds of auditions, I knew I’m now in new territory. It’s the most commercial film I’ve ever been a part of in my career. When I saw the film a few days before the release, I told Mohit ‘you’ve made a phaaadu film. I wish I had more scenes in it, but I’m happy to be a part of it’. The film has surpassed everybody’s expectations including the team.

How do you think cinema has changed over the years ?

It’s harder to get people in the theatres. We deal with high food & ticket prices, competition from ott, video games & other forms of entertainment. It’s damn good that people have returned back to the cinemas for a non toxic, emotional love story musical that too with newcomers. Great for Indian cinema as it will encourage others to go down this road too.

What’s next from you ?

Currently shooting for an OTT film, in a leading role. It’s a crime caper & I love the script.
Hoping to sign more things soon.

OTT, TV or Films – your favourite platform and why ?

I love it all. On OTT you get to explore your character arcs better as you have longer durations to tell your story. But the power of a Bollywood blockbuster is something else. I now understand the high of it. It’s the highest high for sure. Watching yourself on the big screen to a full house is a different high.
TV is great for the money..consistent, regular, office like.
