While it’s been more than five years since we bid adieu to Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, its characters, story, and performances have left a lasting legacy. Featuring what arguably could be television’s best pairing, Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel, the show also brought together a stellar cast who helped make it the iconic series it became.
Today, on International Day of Families, we look at how the Bhalla and Iyer families redefined the meaning of family andmohabbatein in the show.
Ishita and Raman were, of course, neighbours, and through Ishita’s deep connection with Raman’s daughter, Ruhi, they got married, and Raman and his family gained custody of Ruhi after his divorce from Shagun. Raman came from a Punjabi family, while Ishita was from a Tamil one. The two families often clashed due to their cultural differences, but with time and understanding, they became inseparable.
Ishita showed how a stepmother can truly love a child like her own, and she became a mother to both Ruhi and Aditya. With time, old wounds and differences between the family and Shagun also healed. Even Shagun became just like a member of the family and helped raise Ishita and Raman’s daughter, Pihu, after the first leap.
Following the introduction of Alia, Ishita’s friend Mani’s niece, the family got even closer as Alia married Aditya and Shagun married Mani. Ishita’s cousin Mihika married Raman’s brother Romy, forming another alliance between the Iyers and Bhallas.
The show became a celebration of family. At a time when nuclear families are the norm and many feel isolated, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein showed how beautiful a family can truly be—and that the union of two families can become one big, happy family. Their joyful moments gave us laughs and smiles, and through all the challenges they faced, they stood together. They still serve as an inspiration to the show’s large fanbase worldwide.
On this International Day of Families, we salute the Yeh Hai Mohabbatein family, which became THE international family that lives on in our hearts forever! How we’d love to go through the journey with them all over again!
