From non-stop ration fights to open ‘laadla-ism’: How Bigg Boss 18 is getting it all wrong

Spread the love

Bigg Boss has cemented its place as the number one Indian reality show over the years. The show, which airs on Colors, enjoys a strong fan following not only in India but key international markets such as the UK, USA, and South Africa. The 18th season of the show has been on air for about a month now, and the report card isn’t looking that bright. Here’s a look at everything that’s making this season a skippable one so far.

Yup! We’ve had to coin a new term this season:  laadla-ism. Right from the start, Bigg Boss’ open declaration of Vivian Dsena being his ‘laadla’ was not received well by the neutral and general audience who have supported the show over the years. Open Bias was part of season 17’s concept, so why is it finding its way in this season? From highlighting his exclusive coffee to being called a ‘laadla’ (dear one) in front of the others,  viewers and other housemates have been discouraged by this. Adding to it, only his perspective is highlighted on weekends, completely ignoring that of other housemates.
The housemates he hangs out with also benefit from this, as their wrongdoings often go unnoticed. They are sometimes referred to as the ‘only genuine bond,’ when in reality, they come across as contestants who are there to support a leader and feed each other’s egos. Another point to note is if these four housemates were not highlighted from time to time they would not even be featured in the episodes due to their lack of constructive contributions on the show.
Another aspect which the audience is tired of is the mould of the young rebel, which was created over the years. Almost every season there happens to be a young male contestant, often fit and strong, who wants to behave like a rebel, knowing it’s a way to move ahead on the show easily. This occurred a lot in the first two weeks, leaving viewers irked and completely tired of seeing the same type of personality again.
Note that we have nothing against any of the contestants, but the problem lies in the creative decisions of the show, which need to be addressed.
Roughly 70-80% of debates and arguments have been about ration this season. From leaving the ration decisions and then menu decisions to jail inmates to asking them to write a ration list, this is the only thing that seems to get them fired up. Where are the great tasks we used to see that brought out the true passion in the contestants? Tasks also amplified competitiveness and gave us iconic friendships and enmities.
It’s time to even out the playing field in Bigg Boss 18 and make this season an exciting, and memorable one. Every week has been repetitive with viewers skipping many episodes. It’s time to bring forth the original and never-before-seen personalities who have a lot to offer.
These concerns come from die-hard Bigg Boss fans who care about the show’s legacy and wish for an entertaining and engaging season.
