Mangal Lakshmi opened up by showing the audience Mangal’s (Deepika Singh) busy daily routine, trying to manage her household and family members. At the same time, they seek a suitable partner for her cousin sister Lakshmi (Sanika Amit), who is more like a sister to Mangal and was raised by her too. Mangal averts a wrong alliance for Lakshmi and is headstrong about Lakshmi not getting married until they find someone worthy of being her soulmate.
Mangal’s mother and sister are not loving towards Lakshmi and consider her more of a burden in their house. Meanwhile, Mangal faces constant disrespect from her husband, Adit (Naman Shaw), despite having a somewhat supportive mother and father-in-law. We also get introduced to Karthik (Shubham Dipta), a successful and famous singer who is Adit’s cousin brother. Karthik has a girlfriend, Jiya, but it is evident he does not feel strongly about her, nor does his mother. Lakshmi, a fan of his song and Karthik liking Lakshmi’s lyrics he accidentally found will have you rooting for Karthik and Lakshmi’s love story yet to unfold and intertwine with Mangal’s story.
Mangal Lakshmi can be considered the saving grace of the fiction space of television because it has a strong idea and executes it clearly and neatly. At a time when television is filled with love triangles and repetitive tracks, there is finally a show which brings something completely new and relatable for the whole family. This show also dares to explore how different households are connected, similar to many home and family settings today.
Deepika Singh shines as Mangal and can get every nuance of the character right, making her so lovable, and you would feel as if Mangal is your own loved one. Debutant Sanika Amit is excellent as Lakshmi, as the character balances independence and oppression at the same time. Naman Shaw is splendid as Adit, with his grey shades appearing so natural while Shubham Dipta makes Karthik all the more charming! Urvashi Upadhyay as Mangal’s mother-in-law Kusum, is also delightful to watch. Kusum supports her daughter-in-law and has faith in her choice of wife for her son, but at the same time, she feels Mangal needs to do more of the ‘adjusting.’
As a whole, Mangal Lakshmi is a package of a unique story, fantastic performances, and strong characters which make you look forward to watching each new episode. Television needs a show like this, which can appeal to the audience and offer a brave and unusual narrative for viewers to resonate with.
Mangal Lakshmi airs every day on Colors TV at 9 p.m. in India and South Africa, 6 p.m. in the UK, and ET at 8:30 PM and PT at 9:30 PM in the US.
