Devoleena Bhattacharjee – “I am ambitious and crave to explore new roles.”

In Conversation With Devoleena Bhattacharjee

Devoleena Bhattacharjee. Does the name sound familiar? Of course, it does. I am referring to one of the most popular faces on Indian Television. Devoleena, who’s recently completed ten years within the Hindi Television Industry got into an exclusive conversation with me as we tracked back her journey, discussed her career aspirations and more. Asking her what inspired her to become an actress, Devoleena responded, “The first time I realised that I want to be on television was when I watched Smriti Irani play Tulsi Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. At the time, I was also doing theatre and knew that I can do well in this field so I decided to venture into the world of entertainment. My mother has been a huge support in my acting journey till date.”

Devoleena who’s recently completed nine years of playing Gopi Modi in Star Plus’s popular serial Saath Nibhaana Saathiya reveals that initially, she didn’t like Gopi’s character, “Initially I did not like the character but gradually as the character developed over the years and become a strong woman who fought against the wrongs, that’s when the connection happened and I fell in love with Gopi.”

As viewers and fans must be aware, playing a positive character comes with its own set of issues for instance being typecast to playing the docile female lead. I thus asked Devoleena if after playing a positive character like Gopi, would you ever consider playing a grey shaded or negative character? To which she responded, “Why not? I am an actor and as an actor I am ambitious and crave to explore new roles and characters.” She adds, “I feel one can explore more shades when doing grey or negative roles than positive roles. Positive roles can make you a great hero or heroine but negative roles can make you great actors at some point depending upon the character. The best negative role so far is Komolika by Urvashi Dholakia. I can never forget that.” Interesting, we cannot wait to see you play a grey shaded or negative character!

Besides Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, Devoleena was recently seen playing Laxmi in Disney+Hotstar’s  Lunch Stories Chapter 2 which was certainly well received. Asking her about her experience filming for this project she responded, “As I’ve said I love to explore and so I loved playing Laxmi. It was absolutely different than what I do on TV.”

Whilst discussing projects, for those of you that don’t know, Devoleena has an upcoming short film with Lakshmi R Iyer. Without revealing much the actress mentioned, “Yes, soon we are going on the floor. The story is beautiful and I am glad to be a part of the amazing cast and crew. It’s an old love story with many more twists and turns. To know more you will have to wait and watch.” Well doesn’t that sound exciting folks?

Since this interview was conducted through the fans’ questions, I asked Devoleena some of the most requested questions by her fans. Firstly, many of your fans are asking for a musical collaboration with Rahul Vaidya. What’s your take on it? Devoleena responded, “Well I won’t mind. Professionally I am absolutely fine working with anybody.” Secondly, when can we expect your comeback on Indian Television? To which Devoleena responded, “Well hopefully soon. I am waiting for the right project to come so I can kill the hunger inside me.” Thirdly, your fans are eager to know whether you’re open to doing South language films and OTT Web Series? Devoleena replied, “Yes I am open to doing South films and also OTT web series. Again, I’m just waiting for the right content and opportunity.”

As I was nearing the end of the interview I asked Devoleena what do you enjoy doing in your spare time? To which she responded, “I love watching movies. Drinking a hot cup of coffee, Playing with Angel and so on… the list is long (smiles).” I also asked her what advice would you give to those that wish to enter the creative industry? Devoleena responded, “Try and keep faith. If it’s meant for you it will happen and you will know it.”

As we wrapped up the interview Devoleena decided to give a message to all her fans, “Thank you for loving and supporting me in everything that I’ve done so far and I promise to keep you all entertained with the projects to come. Stay safe, take care.”
