Very few films impact you so deeply that you cannot stop thinking about it, and Chandu Champion is one of those films!
Chandu Champion tells the story of the real-life hero Murlikant Petkar, who set out to achieve his dream of winning an Olympic gold medal. As often is the case, a big dream is laughed at and ridiculed, but all of this only makes Murlikant more determined to achieve his dream. As destiny often plays its part in one’s life, Murlikant ends up joining the army to achieve his Olympic dream just like previous sporting greats did. Through the film, we see his journey through his service and his excellence in boxing. We then see how he faced a setback which would make anyone believe his Olympic dream is over.
This and his journey to the Paralympics form the map of the story, and we seriously do not want to give away much!
Kartik Aaryan sinks deep into his role of Murlikant Petkar and gives his career-best performance. Not once do you see Kartik, all you see is Murlikant Petkar! Kartik embraces every challenge of the character so beautifully and passes with flying colours. Vijay Raaz once again gives an exceptional performance as Tiger Ali, Murlikant’s boxing coach cum guide. Bhuvan Arora, as Karnail, makes for the friend everyone deserves to have. The rest of the cast also deserves appreciation. Aniruddh Dave, as Murlikant’s brother Jagannath, is fantastic, and you see this in a crucial scene outside the hospital. Hemangi Kavi, who plays Murlikant’s mother, also delivers a heartwarming performance.
Now, where do we start with the director, Kabir Khan? All we can say is that no review or award could do justice to what he has accomplished with this film. To bring to life a true story and execute it in such a fine cinematic experience is something only the gifted can do, and Kabir Khan is definitely gifted! The best films are those where you can see the partnership of the director and actor worked wonders, and Kabir Khan and Kartik Aaryan’s partnership should go down in the history books. The heart and passion they both poured into the film individually and as a duo is evident, making the film a precious masterpiece.
Pritam once again proves why he is a hitmaker, and his music runs through the film like a beautiful flowing river. While ‘Satyanaas‘ will get you in the groove, ‘Tu Hai Champion’ and ‘Sarphira‘ give you the awakening you need to achieve your dreams, just like Murlikant Petkar. The rest of the songs also serve the film well and are well-placed.
Chandu Champion will make you feel every emotion possible, and don’t be afraid to shed those tears because they will surely come! A film like Chandu Champion does not come by often, and we can say that this is a film every person should watch in their lifetime. It’s not just a film, but an experience which everyone should go through. It’s a story of the triumph of the human spirit and what makes us who we are and a celebration of what a film made from the deepest parts of the heart is like.
