Exclusive Interview With Choreographer Atul Jindal

Atul Jindal is the well-known choreographer in the industry whose choreography includes some of Yo Yo Honey Singh’s biggest chartbusters like ‘Party with the Bhootnath’, ‘Chaar bottle Vodka’, ‘Blue eyes’, ‘Loca Loca’ and the very recent ‘Saiyaan Ji’ featuring Nushrat Bharucha.

Atul, who completed his dance graduation from Broadway Dance Centre in New York and studied Music video direction at the University of Southern California, LA, has over the past few years proved his mettle and has become of the go-to names for all things dance in the industry.

Apart from Honey Singh, Atul has choreographed some of the biggest names in the industry for music videos, ads, and shows. In his relatively young career, Atul has choreographed Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Diljeet Dosanjh, Badshah, Kriti Sanon, Raveena Tandon, and Raftaar to name a few.

Having worked in the industry for over a decade now, Atul has set up two studios and teams in Mumbai and Delhi and continues to carve a niche for himself in the industry.

In an exclusive interview with Urban Asian, Atul shares his experience while working on Kanta Laga and Bad Boy Bad Girl. Experts from the interview :

Song Kanta Laga is doing really well, how was the whole experience while choreographing this one?

The experience was amazing! Working with not 1 but 3 such powerhouses of talent was incredible. It was a great learning experience too, as I had to create a choreography that would suit each of their unique styles and personalities and at the same time be commercially viable and catchy for the audiences.

The song is a bit different in terms of choreography, who was the first thing that came to your mind while choreographing it?

The first time I heard the song, I thought it was very catchy! It had new school music but the chorus lyrics Uii Maa had a Bollywood flavor. So I decided to choreograph using both hip-hop and new school elements but still adding a Bollywood touch to the hook step.
I can see that it’s already becoming a craze on social media!

You have choreographed almost all Honey Singh tracks, how did that journey start? Your first meet with him?

Yes, it’s been a long ride! I think he saw us performing somewhere and he really liked it, so he called me one day out of the blue. I thought it was a prank call but it turned out to be the man himself!
Our first project together was Blue Eyes which is such an iconic song, I’m so glad that marked my intro to the industry.
Blue Eyes is the first song I was so nervous and had no idea about how to choreograph for the camera. I gave it my all and YoYo really supported and encouraged me! I think that turned out to be one of our best choreos to date!
It’s been a roller coaster since, I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to see his creative journey and deliver one banger after the other with him, from blue eyes to love dose, 4 bottle vodka to Saiyan Ji, and so many more!

YoYo is such a powerful performer with so much natural swag, any choreography that I make for him, he makes it his own and takes it to another level!

You have also choreographed Bollywood stars like Kriti Sanon, Abhishek Bachchan, Raftaar for their live shows. How different experience it is to choreograph live shows? And how was it working with them?

Working on live shows has its own charm, the excitement and adrenalin to do it live – in one go, no retakes matches no other!
Since I’m originally trained in performing arts from New York, stage choreographies were my first love.
& I’ve been lucky to choreograph shows such as Temptation Reloaded, Mirchi Music Awards, Celebrity Cricket League, and reality shows like Lip Sing Battle & more.
The experience of working with all these artists is amazing, there’s so much to learn from each of them.
I always do my homework by watching their previous projects, videos, social media to understand their personal style, body language, and what kind of movement comes naturally to them. The biggest job of a choreographer is to understand that and then build on it to create a choreography that takes their performance to the next level.

Your recently released song ‘Bad Boy Bad Girl’ with Badshah and Mrunal Thakur is a chartbuster, tell us something about it in terms of choreography?

It’s actually my first music video with Badshah. I have choreographed for his Ultimate Pop Show and also for a reality show.
The song is great, it has really chill vibe, I know people will love to dance on it.
I’ve made the choreography very groovy, using old-school moves to complement Badshah’s natural swag.
Also very excited for everyone to see Mrunal in a very different flavor and style of dancing.

You have also directed for a music video which will be out soon, it’s your directorial debut. Tell us something about that.

Having choreographed so many pop songs, I always had an inclination towards the direction, which is when I went to study music video director at the University of Southern California, LA. I’d been wanting to explore a diff genre of videos that is more contemporary, narrative, and storyline-based. It was fateful when Ipsitaa reached out to me with her new song.
I had choreographed her for her debut song First Kiss with Yo-Yo and we really connected.
