The trailer of The Accidental Prime Minister, starring Anupam Kher as former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was launched today. As you might be aware, the film is based on Dr. Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s PM from 2004-2014. Based on the 2014 memoir of the same name by Sanjaya Baru, the film is directed by Vijay Ratangar Gutte and also stars Akshaye Khanna.

Speaking about the controversies that might arise, Anupam said,

“I don’t think I’m worried about that. Let’s not anticipate that. Of course the film is controversial. That was a controversial area. Let’s not run away from that. Everybody had heard about ‘The Accidental Prime’ book and the controversy behind the book. So my first reaction was to not be a part of this film because of many reasons. One was that I thought it would be political film. The other was that it’s not easy to portray Dr. Manmohan Singh because he’s a current political personality. It’s not 1940s or 1960s or black and white and you can refer to photographs.”

Speaking about what made him eventually take up the role, he said,

“Then I was watching TV and I saw Dr. Manmohan Singh walling from one place to the other. The actor in me said that let me see if I can walk like him. I was a disaster and that challenged me. I rehearsed for about 30-45 minutes but couldn’t get it right.”

Well, let’s see how well the efforts of the entire team translate on the big screen when the film releases on January 11.
