Ranbir Kapoor, who’s all set for his next film ‘Jagga Jasoos’, agrees that the number of films with male protagonists outnumber the ones in which females play the lead.
He says,
“I think it’s changing. It also depends on the audiences’ choices. The female part started since the film industry started. It has only evolved. You have so many movies like ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ and ‘Queen’, ‘Mom’, ‘English Vinglish’, ‘Piku’ & ‘Padmavati’ whose title is on a girl’s name. So there are many films which are being made. It’s very unfair to say that you’re being unfair to the female protagonist. Yes, there’s a long way to go when it comes at an equal level. But yes, there’s a positive change happening in the industry. I think if the content is good and if the story is good, it doesn’t matter if a man or a woman is leading the film. The success of films that I’ve done, like ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ or ‘Rajneeti’ or ‘Barfi’ or ‘Rockstar’, I think the female part or the female actors have had equal importance or equal contribution to the film. I’ve never taken sole credit for it. The actor and the actress share that.”
When asked about the pay disparity between actors and actresses, Ranbir said,
“I don’t know. There’s a lot of misinformation given to the media about how much an actor charges. Yes, the three superstars – the three Khans charge a certain price. But I think for every actor after them, it depends on the film and your stardom and your worth. To be honest, I don’t know how the money game is played. It’s not my desire. I came from a luxurious background so money is not something that I’m after. And it’s not that I’m asking an x amount and I will do a film only if get an x amount. If I really like the film and the director and if the director doesn’t want to pay me, I will not take that amount. When my films don’t do well, I return the money. So that’s how the industry is operating. There’s a lot of misinformation (about remunerations). But to answer your question, there’s a disparity. I’m not denying it.”
