The land, the lore, and the legacy behind Andhar Maya: A show that brings hyper-local storytelling to a global audience

Some stories aren’t just a weekend binge , they awaken something dormant. A memory, a fear, a question we didn’t know we carried. Andhar Maya, ZEE5 Global’s new Marathi horror series, is one such story. It doesn’t rely on gore or jump scares; instead, it creeps in quietly; through silence, ritual, and the unsettling weight of legacy.

Set against the hauntingly beautiful and culturally rich backdrop of the Konkan region, Andhar Maya taps into a landscape long steeped in folklore. Konkan is no stranger to ghost stories, its dense forests, crumbling wadas (ancestral homes), and deep-rooted belief in the supernatural have made it fertile ground for tales of spirits, curses, and rituals gone wrong. Here, the line between myth and reality has always been porous. Andhar Maya uses that porousness to its advantage, telling a story that feels both timeless and immediate. What truly sets Andhar Maya apart is its authenticity. Rituals like pind daan, traditionally performed to bring peace to the departed, become eerie, unsettling pivots in the narrative. Even sacred customs turn sinister when interrupted, distorted, or misunderstood. This is horror rooted in cultural context,  not cliché.

At its core is the Khatu family’s crumbling ancestral wada, a relic of bygone eras and a silent witness to generations of secrets. When the family returns to perform one final ritual, what should bring closure slowly morphs into entrapment. The house itself begins to feel like a living entity, tightening its grip with every step. Director Bhimrao Mude, along with writer Kapil Bhopatkar, crafts a narrative that leans into psychological horror. We meet Gonya, the ever-watchful aging servant, and Antushet, a spectral child whose presence blurs the line between innocence and malevolence. These characters embody the show’s central question: What happens when the past refuses to stay buried?

Meet the Minds and Faces Behind Andhar Maya

Directed by: National Award-winner Bhimrao Mude, known for his grounded, atmospheric storytelling.
Starring: Two-time National Award-winning actor Kishor Kadam in a role shrouded in mystery, alongside the talented Rutuja Bagwe and a brilliant supporting cast that brings emotional authenticity to the screen.

Andhar Maya speaks not only to those who understand the cultural weight of these rituals, but to anyone grappling with legacy, silence within families, or the emotional burden of inherited trauma. For the global Indian diaspora, the series offers more than chills, it offers connection. It reminds us how deeply personal stories, when told honestly, can echo across continents.

Now streaming on ZEE5 Global, Andhar Maya is more than a horror series, it’s a layered cultural experience. By bringing the rich, spine-chilling folklore of Marathi tradition to a global platform, ZEE5 Global opens a window into stories that are hyper-local yet universally haunting. This is horror that lingers.
