When discussing how she typically celebrates Independence Day and any special memories she has from her childhood related to this day, Nikkita shares,

“Since I was 13 years old, I’ve celebrated Independence Day by releasing caged birds and animals. I believe that’s the true meaning of freedom. They deserve to be free and happy, not caged and tormented—not just today, but every day.”

On the topic of people buying the national flag only to discard it afterward, Nikkita emphasizes the importance of awareness, she says,

“I believe awareness plays a crucial role. Educating people, especially children in schools, will go a long way. Everyone should participate in flag hoisting ceremonies instead of carrying paper flags or sticking them on their body parts or vehicles. The more awareness we can spread, the less we’ll see our national flag being disrespected and discarded.”

Reflecting on how India has evolved over the past 78 years and what further changes she hopes to see, Nikkita says,

“As India steps into its 78th year of Independence, it’s time for us as Indians to re-examine and rethink the meaning of the words ‘Independence’ and ‘Freedom.’ Let’s not limit these concepts to just humans—animals in India are still bound to serve humans and are not given the independence they deserve. Animals too seek independence, and their spirits yearn for freedom. As we celebrate our Independence Day, let’s remember the animals and pledge to give them the rights and compassion they deserve.”

When reflecting on how the spirit of Independence Day has evolved, Nikkita observes,

“The spirit of India’s Independence Day celebrations has evolved over the years, reflecting the country’s changing traditions and technological advancements. Technology has also influenced the celebrations, with virtual events, webinars, and social media campaigns playing a significant role in spreading patriotism.”
