Bappi Lahiri: Celebrities mourn and Share Favorite Songs

The Disco King aka Bappi Lahiri

Indian music composer and singer Bappi Lahiri, our very own Disco King, who became a name to reckon with in the 80s, 90s, and even in the present time, breathed his last at Mumbai’s CritiCare Hospital on Wednesday. Bappi Lahiri was 69. The industry is in shock and in a state of mourning losing yet another icon after the demise of Lata Mangeshkar. His last rites will be performed today. Some of Bappi Lahiri’s popular Bengali films include Amar Prem, Mandira, Aamar Tumi etc, and Hindi films are Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Sharaabi, among others. Celebrities share their favorite songs of their loving and always smiling ‘Bappi Da’ as they remember the legend.

I was shocked to read that Bappi Lahiri passed away on the morning of February 16. I think it’s not just me, but every Indian will say that his songs made them put on their dancing shoes. February has been nothing but sad so far, first Lata ji and now Bappi da. As for my favourite song, I love his song “Jimmy, jimmy, jimmy”. It’s a peppy and upbeat song and would make you dance on your seat.

One more talent is now no more with us and I really feel sad. Bappi Lahiri is an epitome and during the 80s and the 90s, he actually created music to some other level. Nobody can forget his first-ever song that was, I am a Disco Dancer. That song is still in us and today also when we listen to it, we move to the beat of that song. I always listen to Chalte Chale Laharon Ke Saath, from the movie Saaheb while driving and it’s my favourite. He was a rockstar and a disco King. He had his own style of wearing glares and all the gold jewels and he never went out of his style. Yes, it is a big loss but it’s life and that’s part of it.

It’s a huge loss to the Indian music industry. I remember listening to Yaar Bina Chain Kaha Re as a kid. His music brought the disco revolution in India and paved the way for a new genre of music. It’s not just his music that we remember but what he stood for, experimenting and evolving. Both Bappi Da and Lata Ji will always be there with us, and we will cherish their craft.

Bappi Da happened to music when we were growing up, so he has influenced a big part of our childhood. My favourite song was Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re from Saaheb. It was so refreshing, deep and very upbeat. Also, it was a different song on friendship. I loved his voice. Then there was Yaad aa raha hai from Disco Dancer, the film that got Bappi Da on the map. Another favourite is, Pyaar Kabhi Kam Nahin Karna from Prem Pratigya. I loved the way he sang. But my all-time favourite is Chalte chalte because Kishore [Kumar] Da put life to this Bappi Da composition. Yes, it is a big loss. Especially for us whose childhood after RDB was Bappi Da, the man who got disco to Indian homes at the click of a button. Looks like all greats will meet in heaven and start a new journey there. Lata Ji, Kishore Da, Bappi da, RDB, and the likes. It’s a slow end of the kind of music we have grown up with. God bless his soul.

Bappi Da, it’s like the new wave in Indian music. He brought the flavour of disco dancing chartbusters to India. Too many songs composed and sung by him come to mind when I am thinking about it now. But my favourite song is Yaad aa Raha hai Tera Pyaar. He did the music launch of my film Hunterrr. I have met him many times. He was a gem of a person. Really sad about this loss.

Yaad Aa Raha Hai Tera Pyar from the movie Disco Dancer is my favorite song. Whenever I listen to this song, it reminds me of my childhood days. I used to start dancing and enjoy moving every time this song was played when I was a kid. Still, it’s very refreshing to hear and is on my all-time favourite songs list.

It’s definitely a huge loss for the music industry. I was really shocked to hear this news. I really loved Bappi Da’s music because. The ’70s and ’80s were the disco time and by the time we were in school and college, there was a disco fever and Bappi Da was the man who brought disco. All his songs like Disco Dancer, Yaad Aa Raha Hai Tera Pyaar, Jimmy Jimmy are very upbeat and peppy. One of my favorites is from the movie Satyamev Jayate which is Dil Me Ho Tum.. the song was picturized on Vinod Khanna Ji and Anita Raj and it was sung beautifully. It was a wonderful piece. I am a disco dancer is definitely a raging hit song.

It’s a big loss for India and especially the music industry. I still can’t believe that we lost two legends of the industry in 10 days. Bappi Lahiri was of course the disco king of India. He changed the music scene in the country in the 80s and we have all been in awe of his songs. My favourite song by Bappi Lahiri Ji is “I am a disco dancer”. I absolutely love the song and the beats are such a mood-lifter. There won’t be a Bappi da ever again, he will be truly missed.

Yes, After Lata ji this is the second loss to the Bollywood industry. His demise leaves a big void in the world of Indian music. Can’t express this as we have listened to so many of his songs. He was known for his groovy disco tunes and eye-catching fashion style. One of my favorite songs by Bappi Da is Mere Ye Geet Yaad Rakna from the movie Chalte Chalte.

It’s saddening news that we have lost two gems of the Music industry. Bappi Da was popular in the 1980s and 1990s. His voice was the reason for millions to dance, including me. He has sung so many songs, picking a single special is beyond difficult. One of my favourites of his is Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re from the Movie: Saaheb (1985).

We are losing our gems from the music world one after another. His demise is a great loss to the music fraternity. Inteha ho gayi intezzar ki and Manziley Apni Jageh Hai Raaste Apni Jageh… are my favourite songs composed by Bappi Da. Raat baki baat baaki duet with Asha Ji from Namak halal is also one of his songs that I like.

Jawani Janeman Hasin Dilruba, this super hit song from the 1982 movie Namak Halal is my favourite. Bappi Da lent his voice to so many hit songs. Since childhood, we have been listening to his songs and Indians fell in love with it, including me. Thanks to his funky, foot-stomping music. Saddened by his demise.

It’s extremely saddening and unfortunate that Bappi Lahiri Ji passed away. He left a legacy of music that is going to be remembered for generations and decades to come. It’s a huge loss after Lata Ji to the Bollywood industry that cannot be covered ever. My favourite songs by Bappi Da were Tamma Tamma, it’s special to me because I performed on this song in the Gold Awards. I also loved the song Ooh La La. I feel extremely sad that iconic legends of the music industry are no more.

This is the most shocking and sad news. In the 80s and 90s, he was known for popularising disco music in India. His signature style, which included dark shades, layers of gold chains and jewellery, as well as his big smile and rock star mentality, would be missed by many. One of my favourite songs by Bappi Da is Tamma Tamma Loge from the movie Thanedaar (1989). He remains the most beloved voice of India and will always be in every Indian heart.

Jasmin Bhasin

Bappi Da’s music was very catchy. Yarr Bina Chain Kahan Re picturised on Anil Kapoor, Amrita Singh and Jawani  Janeman from Namak Halal picturized on Parveen Babi are my favourites. After Lata Ji, it is a huge loss to the entertainment industry. May his soul rest in piece.

That’s the saddest news ever. The thought of Bappi Lahiri immediately takes me to watch Disco Dancer in my childhood days and the songs that were filmed on Mithun da. Yaad aa raha hai Tera pyar is one that still remains in my heart. Another huge loss for us.

Bappi Lahiri was fantastic at singing as well as giving music. His songs like Yadd Aa Rha Hai, Mumbai Se Aaya Mere Dost, Yaar Bina Chain Kaha Re are superhits and evergreen. His disco songs we have grown up watching and his signature style of wearing gold were quite unique. He lived life King Size. He will live through his songs in our hearts.
