On October 2, 2019, Warner Bros. Pictures released one of the biggest hits of 2019 – Joker. The film starring Joaquin Phoenix and made under the direction of Todd Phillips did tremendous business in the Indian market.
There is a massive Oscar buzz around the film with a whopping 11 nominations including best actor, film and director. The film also bagged the best actor awards at both the Golden Globe and Star Actors Guild awards. Warner Bros. Pictures, in lieu of this buzz, have decided to re-release the Joker for the Indian audiences on February 14 – four days after the Oscar awards.
While usually Oscar winning/nominated films are re-released because they fail to do the anticipated business first time around, that’s not the case with Joker. The film did extremely well and the makers believe that Joker being touted as the Oscar’s front runner will not only draw newer audience to the theatre but is also expected to garner a momentous repeat footfall to see their favourite anti-hero one more time on the big screen.
Joker is going to re-release in cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Gurgaon, Noida, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ernakulam, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Mysore, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore and more
Apart from Best Actor, Film and Director, Joker has also been nominated for Cinematography, Costume design, Sound mixing, Sound editing, Original score, Film editing, Best adapted screenplay and Best make up and hairstyling.
Talking about the many nominations director Todd Phillips said,
“Joker began as an idea, an experiment really— could we take an “indie approach” to a studio film by inverting it into a character study to reflect the world around us? Explore what we’re seeing and feeling in society, from the lack of empathy to the effects of the absence of love. I am deeply honored by the overwhelming recognition of the Academy this morning, and I want to thank the genius that is Joaquin Phoenix, and all my incredible collaborators. We are beyond humbled that our peers in the filmmaking community have embraced the film and its message.”
Joaquin Phoenix had said,
“I feel honored and humbled to have been nominated by my fellow actors. The Academy’s encouragement helped ignite and sustain my career and I am incredibly grateful for that support. I’d like to also congratulate my fellow nominees for being recognized for their inspiring performances that have enriched our art form.”
