- How did you come up with the idea of Mulk?
It was probably a mix about a lot of things that I wanted to say about our times. A few newspaper headlines that disturbed me. So it’s a mix of all these.
- How did you come up with the cast of Mulk?
When you write a script some faces start showing up in your head and these were exactly the faces that were popping up in my head. And thankfully all of them that I wanted for the film agreed to be a part of it.

- How was it working with Rishi Kapoor?
Fantastic! He is so much like a child. Wanting to do his best, trying to give the maximum energy, extremely professional, very good actor (needless to say). So overall it was great fun and a delight working with him.
- How was it working with Taapsee Pannu?
Taapsee is so focused. I feel that focus should be her middle name. (Laughs) She is desired to be good, desired to be in a certain kind of films. She is politically aware, has an opinion, an intelligent girl. It was great fun working with her. You need actors like this more.
- A scene that was difficult to shoot.
Quite a few though. The entire court scene was difficult to shoot. There are so many actors involved, there are so many angles involved and you have to keep it engaging, interesting. I had never shot in a courtroom in my life, so that was very challenging for me but at the start of the second day I had started enjoying and loving it.
- Do you feel that it is difficult to portray real story/situations in a movie?
This can’t be a general answer. For some people it might be difficult, for some, it might not be. It wasn’t difficult for me because I come from that world, so most of the things come out very organically.
- Do you feel that serious issues/ situations attract the audience more?
I think so, because of the kind of response I am getting. I am hoping that they go and watch the film because it is a very important film about our time. And a lot of things that we don’t talk about are being talked about in this film. So I am hoping that it works.
- Do Box Office numbers matter to you?
Of course, a lot! There is no point in making movies that don’t do well theatrically. I really care about Box Office numbers. And when I am saying this I am not talking about making a 100crs all the time but I am talking about the profit and loss equation. So mainly it is that smaller films can be happy with smaller numbers and a bigger film will have to secure more.
- Do you feel that promotional activities help in the success of a movie?
I think so. We live in such a large diverse country, there are so many options in terms of platforms so you have to reach out to all of them, make them aware of a film and excite them enough to go to the theatre to watch the film. So there is no other way you can do that, you have to indulge in a lot of promotional activities.

- What’s next?
There is another film which is ready which I shot earlier this year and it’s called Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hain. As soon as this gets over I will have to jump into other.
