Karan Oberoi: I have totally lived my life on my terms

Actor-singer Karan Oberoi, who rose to fame with his band, A Band of Boys, will soon be making his Bollywood acting as well as playback debut. Karan, who has been seen in shows such as ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin’ and ‘Dishayen’, says that he has always been satisfied with whatever he has achieved in life.

“I feel most proud of the fact that I have totally lived my life on my terms and conditions and have never succumbed to any pressure of conformity. All that I have and all that I have done; good bad or ugly, I am responsible for and will continue to be so,” he says.

There are a few moments from his career, which have played a big part in defining who he is.

“The first time I performed on stage was the most defining moment of my life. I sang a ghazal by Jagjit Singh called Woh Kaagaz Ki Kashti Woh Barish Ka Pani. The praise and compliments that I got from the audience after the performance, was something that I had never experienced in my life. That got me addicted to performing for audiences across all demographic and spectrums,” he says.

Ask him the thought process behind being part of the acting and singing field, and he says,

“I didn’t choose this profession, it chose me. The calling to be an artist came from within. That, combined with support from my parents and everyone at home, ensured that I followed and achieved my dream.”

Although he loves it, working in this industry can get stressful, but Karan has the perfect way to relax.

“I spend my free time writing or singing to myself or my near and dear ones. These are mostly ghazals which I don’t get to perform on stage. I occasionally also catch some good movies with my friends,” he says.

Karan has always received praise for his singing abilities and now wants to get into programming too.

“One skill I’d like to learn is to be able to program my songs myself, without depending on anyone.  Writing a melody and the process after that is like a painting that I sketch and someone else comes and colours it. I am working towards it,” he says.

The creative field is fun, but Karan says that complacency can kill it.

“What I am most afraid of is repetition and mediocrity…Or to reach a point where I am accepting of it. Another thing that scares me is curbing my restless energy and enthusiasm for life. I hope that never happens till my dying day,” he says, adding, “My dogged spirit, self-discipline and tenacity are my biggest asset in my work sphere.”
