Yo Yo Honey Singh Reveals his Struggle with Bipolar Disorder

Fans are ecstatic about the return of their favorite Punjabi rocker, Yo Yo Honey Singh. But why was Yo Yo Honey Singh away for so long? The singer revealed to Times of India that he was not in rehab for drug overdose as the rumors say, but he was dealing with bipolar disorder!

After 18 months he performed at an award show marking his return—needless to say, fans and industry members alike we’re glad to see the singing sensation back in action with his “Lungi Dance.” The singer wanted to speak directly to the media and on the special day of his birthday, he revealed all the details of why he was away!

“This is the first time I am talking about it as I want my fans to know what happened to me. Nobody knows about this, and I wanted to tell the world myself, not through a spokesperson,” Honey Singh said. “The last 18 months were the darkest phase of my life, and I wasn’t in a state to talk to anyone. I know there were rumours that I was in rehab (for drug overdose), but I was in my Noida house throughout. The truth is I was suffering from bipolar disorder. It went on for 18 months, during which I changed four doctors, the medication wasn’t working on me and crazy things were happening…I must confess that I was bipolar and an alcoholic, which aggravated the condition.”

Yo Yo Honey Singh spoke out about this dark time and explained the severity of his disorder and how it affected his everyday life and career.Honey-Singh-launches-fight-club

“It was scary. One year had passed and I wasn’t responding to medicines,” Honey Singh said. “Until a fourth doctor from Delhi treated me. At one point, I thought I would live in this darkness forever. I had cut myself off from everyone. I didn’t come out of my room, forget stepping out of the house. I had a beard and I didn’t get a haircut for months. For someone who has performed in front of a crowd of 20,000, I was scared of facing 4-5 people. That’s what bipolar disorder does to you.”

He even cleared the air about the alleged fall out between him and Shah Rukh Khan. The rumor was that the actor had slapped the singer but Yo Yo Honey Singh denied that ever happening. He went on to say that King Khan and many others had called to check in on him during his dark times. Yo Yo Honey Singh said SRK  “is amazing, he’s not just a great actor, but also a superb personality.

Yo Yo Honey Singh still managed to do a lot while he was in this dark phase of life. He has even released four tracks while he was ill and hopes to work on more contemporary music next to try to bring back street hip hop. He said that he did end up writing a lot during this time and managed to write 50-60 poems but he describes them as “Khuli Shayari” so he can’t make them into songs but he may publish them in a book later. Yo Yo Honey Singh is also releasing Punjabi action-drama—though he’s not a trained actor. The singing sensation explains acting was very tough and was something totally unplanned but as an entertainer, he decided to give it a shot.

At the moment, the singer is excited to perform at the Times of India Film Awards 2016 in Dubai as this is the first time he will perform with Salman Khan. Thankfully it seems the singer is doing much better but the journey is still on towards a healthier life.

“I was scared about losing myself,” he explained about facing bipolar disorder. “After the sun went down, I was scared of my own family. I wasn’t behaving like myself. I was a sick person. I wasn’t in my own control. But now it is all behind me and I’ve come out of it. I am under a doctor’s supervision, and before doing this interview, I called and told him that I was going to tell the world about this. I think I’m not my own or my parents’ property. I belong to my fans who have made me. They needed to know, and this was the best time to talk about it. “

In recent times, Deepika Padukone came out about her struggles with depression and actress Shama Sikander also revealed that she suffers from bipolar disorder. Mental Health issues are taking the forefront in Bollywood as more stars are stepping out in support of various causes.

We hope that as the darkness lifts from Yo Yo Honey Singh’s life, and that he too, takes a stand to bring positive changes and awareness to these disorders in India like his peers.
