On Thursday July 21, Mandeep Sethi had his debut New York City performance as a part of DJ Rekha’s Basement Bhangra Summer Series. Basement Bhangra is generally the first thursday of the month, however, this summer DJ Rekha is having a Summer Series in which she has musical guests perform. Launched in 1997, Basement Bhangra brings together people of all races, making it an international phenomenon.
Mandeep Sethi got the crowd going with his track “Activating Souls.” After a few more tracks mixed in with a few freestyles about Rekha, Basement Bhangra and the city of New York, Sethi brought The Kominas frontman, Basim Usmani, to the stage. Then, Sethi brought up dhol player Sonny Singh. The crowd cheered, sang and danced as the three musicians tore up the stage with their bhangra/hip hop fusion.
