The soundtrack from Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming film Bombay Velvet has been released! With music composed by Amit Trivedi and lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, this heavily Jazz album is full of songs that will take you back to the era of the retro 70s.
“Mohabbat Buri”, one of the most popular songs of the album thus far, has been rendered in three different voices – Shalmali Kholgade, Neeti Mohan, and Shefali Alvares – with Neeti’s and Shefali’s renditions set to a 3-beat variation of the original 4-beat track sung by Shalmali.
Neeti Mohan’s voice is particularly sultry and spunky in the song “Ka Kha Gha”, in which she really proves to listeners that not only can her voice reach high ranges, she can also sing with attitude and emotion at those ranges.
Retro music lovers will really enjoy “Naak Pe Gussa” because it has the melodic vibe of Shankar-Jaikishan’s 1960s song “Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh”, sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the film Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai. I particularly loved the syncopated rhythms and strong off-beats in “Sylvia”, which was in stark contrast to the mellow and subdued romanticism of “Behroopia”, rendered by Mohit Chauhan and Neeti Mohan.
In this soundtrack, Amit Trivedi uses lots of traditional brass instruments, namely trumpet and trombone, in addition to piano and drums in some tracks. The intermittent spurts of trumpet and overall brass instrument energy lend a mysterious aura to this thriller musical. Amit Trivedi displays a very different side of his composing style in this album, a reflection that he is truly diversifying his work!
Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Karan Johar, Bombay Velvet is scheduled to release on May 15, 2015.
