It’s hard to believe 13 years have passed since the release of Karan Johar and Nikhil Advani’s iconic film Kal Ho Naa Ho. As someone who looped this film endlessly on-repeat, to the point of memorizing dialogues and reenacting certain scenes, I can vouch that this is one of those millennial Bollywood cult classics that you will fall in love with every time you watch it. To celebrate this momentous anniversary, here are five things we love about Kal Ho Naa Ho!
1. SRK-Saif Chemistry
This is the film that made the hit jodi of SRK and Saif Ali Khan. Aman and Rohit are bros for life, and their chemistry and rib-tickling comedy in this film are fantastic. If only the two of them actually ended up together as a couple in the movie!
2. Comedy of Errors
Many of the funny scenes in Kal Ho Naa Ho are spontaneous and based on a series of comedy of errors. Every character’s confusion and lack of awareness of what’s going on add unexpected elements of humor to this rom-com-drama. My personal favorite – the story of how Rohit and Naina met!
3. Versatile Music
The early 2000s marked the peak of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s musical career, and their work in Kal Ho Naa Ho reflects the contemporary vibe of Bollywood film music at the time. From party numbers like “Maahi Ve” and “It’s the Time to Disco” to the soul-stirring title track, this album is a truly versatile classic.
4. Romance
No Dharma Production film is complete without some element of typical Bollywood romance! Unexpectedly, there are actually multiple generations of lovers in Kal Ho Naa Ho, from young love to elderly flirtations. Take a look!
5. Positivity
Kal Ho Naa Ho is the originator of the phrase YOLO (you only live once) and Aman repeatedly encourages each of the characters to live their lives fully because kya patha, kal ho naa ho (who knows, tomorrow may never come).
