Can you believe it? It’s been 17 years since the iconic Mani Ratnam film, Dil Se, released! Since it is one of my favorite films, I figured the best way to celebrate the film is to give you 17 cool facts about the movie! Check them out below!
- Dil Se was a success overseas. It earned $975,000 (USA) and £537,930 in the UK, thereby becoming the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office chart
- Dil Se marked the debut of actress Preity Zinta.
- Dil Se was originally called “Ladakh – Ek Prem Kahani”.
- Manisha Koirala wasn’t the first choice for the film, but it was Kajol who the director wanted. Date issues were the reason Kajol couldn’t sign. We can’t imagine anyone other than Manisha in the film though!
- Apparently, Malaika Arora Khan also wasn’t first choice! However, her amazing dance moves catapulted “Chaiyya Chaiyya” into film history.
- Shahrukh Khan didn’t use a safety harness for “Chaiyya Chaiyya” done on the moving train!
- “Chaiyya Chaiyya” was sung atop the Nilgiri Express. For this song, the entire train was painted brown. After the shooting it was repainted to its original signature blue color.
- The inspiration for “Chaiyya Chaiyya” was a Sufi song called “Thayya Thayya” (which is available on the soundtrack). The two lovers are said to share the relation of God and devotee. Sukhwinder Singh recently mentioned this trivia on Indian Idol Junior 2 as well.
- “Chaiyya Chaiyya” was used as the opening song for Denzel Washington’s movie, “Inside Man”
- American TV show CSI used the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya ” in an episode.
- “Proximas” by Shades of Paradise sampled “Chaiyya Chaiyya”.
- Sukhwinder Singh won the Best Male Playback Award at the 1999 Filmfare Awards for “Chaiyya Chaiyya” and it is the song that truly brought him fame.
- For the song “Jiya Jale,” singer Lata Mangeshkar had some problems singing in the higher octaves due to her age, so composer A.R. Rahman kept her voice as low as possible.
- Sukh Knight song “Prisoner” sampled the song “Jiya Jale”.
- “Satrangi Re” was shot at at Thikshey Gompa and Basgo Gompa ruins in Ladakh as well as at Pangong Lake.
- Some of the parade scenes were shot during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of India’s independence.
- In 2000, Partho Gosh was directing a film titled “Chaiyya Chaiyya” with Fardeen Khan and Preity Zinta that he ended up shelving.
