Rajkumar Rao steals the thunder in Emraan and Vidya's Adhuri Kahani!

Hamari Adhuri Kahani Rating: 3/5

India is infamous for violence against women, bad marriages and the dead ends in romantic relationships which Mohit Suri’s Hamari Adhuri Kahani attempts to bring out on the silver screen. The romantic saga based on the lives of producer Mahesh Bhatt’s parents, Nanabhai Bhatt, Shirin Mohammad Ali and his stepmother highlights one of many stories happening behind closed doors in India.

Marriage is supposed to be a sacred union of two souls, but for Vasudha (Vidya Balan) marriage is a life time of bondage. Vasudha is your typical bhartiya nari with a young child. Her husband Hari (Rajkumar Rao) has been missing in action for the nearly five years and the police suspect that the reason being is that he is part of a random terrorist organization. Once the premisses is set, the film takes the audience back in time to a time where Vasudha, like the millions of girls in India, is being forcefully arranged to Hari by her religious father.

That being said, the audience comes face to face with Aarav (Emraan Hashmi), a rich, classy, powerful man who is in search for the missing piece of his heart. Most people in the world believe that in order to love someone else, one must first learn to love themselves but Aarav has a rather bizarre sense of love. According to him, in order to love someone one must first stop loving themselves.

A top-notch star cast, a brilliant director and a whole lot of expectation but like the title of the film, there is an adhurapan in the plot. The plot of the film is good but lacked the deep and soulful connection required to grasp the true feel of the story. The first half was slow but the intense drama in the second half helps pick up the pace.

Emraan Hashmi as the lover boy is delivers a believable performance but Vidya Balan, who is playing a soft romantic heroine for the first time after Parineeta seems to lack conviction. Rajkumar Rao as the psychotic control freak of a husband delivers a masterful performance making him the true knight in shining armor for the film. Hamari Adhuri Kahani is a must watch for those who want to see Rajkumar Rao back in action.

UrbanAsian gives Hamari Adhuri Kahani a 3/5.
