Music Review: Dil Dhadakne Do

After the unique soundtrack of Kill/Dil, music directors Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, along with lyricist Javed Akhtar, are back with more foot-tapping tracks in Zoya Akhtar’s latest flick Dil Dhadakne Do!

The film’s title track, “Dil Dhadakne Do”, was released with video and is definitely on its way to the weekly top 15. The fresh voices of Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar lend authenticity to this funky upbeat number.

“Pehli Baar” features Sukriti Kakkar, alongside Shankar Mahadevan’s son, Siddharth Mahadevan, who has also rendered the popular song Malang from Dhoom 3. With some similar features as his father’s voice, Siddharth adds his own youthful original touch.

Throughout the album, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy use guitar and trumpets quite a bit to give the same musical rock feel of their previous album Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai. Interestingly, “Gallan Goodiyaan” stands out with its Punjabi flair, wide range of singers, and addictive beats. Fun fact, the entire video of “Gallan Goodiyaan” below has all been taken in only three continuous shots, a popular technique Zoya and Farhan (and their cinematographers) use in many of their films.

Starting with the same beats and vibe as the song “Calcutta Kiss” from Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, “Girls Like to Swing” sounds like it belongs in a Broadway musical. The layering of instruments and harmonies in this track make it quite dynamic, especially with its jazzy elements and the versatile Sunidhi Chauhan’s voice. Look out for the brief tempo change towards the middle, one of my favorite parts of this songs (in addition to the chorus line, of course).

Even though Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy always try to have at least one song that is on the more soulful or soft side, unfortunately “Phir Bhi Yeh Zindagi” doesn’t quite fill that role. It stands out as a bit of an awkward track in this otherwise peppy and lively soundtrack. The melody is interesting but lacks flow to keep listeners engrossed. Nevertheless, Divya Kumar’s voice shines strongly in this song.

Starring Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Farhan, Akhtar, and Anushka Sharma, Dil Dhadakne Do is scheduled to release in theaters on June 5, 2015.
