On Sunday, one of the “leading” newspapers in the country – The Times of India posted a video highlighting Deepika Padukone’s cleavage.
The actress decided to not keep quiet about this and took to Twitter to express her anger. Her reply to The Times of India was:
“Yes!! I am a Woman, I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem!!??
She also commented on the kind of message sent out to the country by a leading newspaper – Disrespect for women. The “cleavage show” dress was reportedly designed by Anaita Shroff Adajania for the trailer launch of one of Deepika’s movies and this is not the first time that The Times of India reported on the dress. The newspaper tried to go the “damage control” road with a lame tweet –
“It’s a compliment! You look so great that we want to make sure everyone knew.”
The original video post has now been removed. Since Deepika’s tweet, she has been getting a tremendous amount of support from people including celebrities like Karan Johar, Priyanka Chopra, Huma Qureshi, Arjun Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Barkha Dutt and more. Hashtag #ISupportDeepikaPadukone has been trending since then and the entire Twitter world has come out to support the actress!
The actress has been very vocal when it comes to social issues. She has also expressed her views regarding the recent scandal about a Telegu actress. The TOI incident is not just disrespectful journalism anymore but also objectifying women in the country. It is high time that the newspaper gives a written apology to the actress for not only objectifying her but also disrespecting women, in general. This incident should not slip away without an apology since it will only open doors to more of such cases. It was a great step taken by Deepika and should not stop without a proper apology.
