Top 10 Bollywood Movies of 2012

Every year Bollywood releases several movies, but only 10 can make it into our top 10.  This list is based strictly on box office success.  Read on below to find out which movie ruled supreme in 2012!  Let us know which one was your favorite!

10 – Son of Sardaar (88.5 crore in India)

Son of Sardaar starred Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt in the lead roles, and co-starred Sonakshi Sinha and Juhi Chawla.  The movie was initially in the news for Devgan’s feud against Yash Raj Films regarding the release date.  However, it managed to overcome these small speed bumps and eventually became a Hit!

09 – Talaash (90.25 crore in India)
Talaash saw the return of Aamir Khan to the big screen after a short hiatus of a couple years.  Expectations were incredibly high for this mystery-thriller, which also co-starred Kareena Kapoor.  The Aamir-Kareena pairing has been successful in the past (3 Idiots! was a blockbuster), and viewers hoped for the same for Talaash.  Talaash didn’t make as big of an impact as predicted, but it still generated good money at the box office, bringing it in at #09 on this list and making it a semi-hit.

08 – Bol Bachchan (100 crore in India)

Ajay Devgan had a great 2012!  Not only did Son of Sardaar do well at the box office, but his other release, Bol Bachchan also did well!  The movie co-starred Abhishek Bachchan, Prachi Desai, and Asin.  Expectations were initially low for the film, but word-of-mouth helped generate good business for it.  It was a light-hearted comedy movie that saw Abhishek take on two different characters. The movie was the first film for Abhishek Bachchan and Prachi Desai that hit the 100 crore mark! For Ajay Devgan, it was his third film to join the elite crore club, and for Asin, it was her fourth film to make it into this exclusive category!

07 – Jab Tak Hain Jaan (101 crore in India)
If a movie has Yash Chopra’s name, along with Shahrukh Khan, and is also a romantic movie, there’s nothing that can stop it from doing well!  Jab Tak Hain Jaan was pitched as being Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture, and sadly, this rumor came true as the legend passed away before it’s release.  The movie saw Shahrukh Khan return to his favorite mood- that of a romantic hero!  It was the first movie to pair Shahrukh Khan opposite the stunning Katrina Kaif.  The movie also saw the return of the hit jodi between Shahrukh Khan and Anoushka Sharma, who earlier wowed audiences in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.  This movie marks Shahrukh’s third film to cross 100 crores and is the second time a Katrina Kaif movie crossed 100 crores.  However, it is the first time an Anoushka Sharma movie has crossed the 100 crore mark.

06 – Barfi! (106 crore in India)

Ever since Ranbir Kapoor debuted in Sawaariya, the public has known that he is one actor who is here to stay.  With Barfi! Kapoor proves that he too has mastered the art of acting like his other relatives (including cousins Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, and of course, grandfather Raj Kapoor).  The movie co-starred Priyanka Chopra, who fully got into her character of an autistic girl.  You won’t notice a hint of Priyanka’s usual glam look in this character, which is the reason it was so believable!  Ranbir plays a mute and deaf boy in the movie, which centers on his relationship with two women – played by Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D’Cruz.  It is the first time Ranbir’s movie has crossed 100 crore, but is the second time for Priyanka Chopra.  This feel-good movie was India’s official entry to the Oscars.

05 – Dabangg 2 (110 crores in India)

These days, it is Salman Khan who is the reigning King Khan at the box office.  Like the original Dabangg, it’s sequel Dabangg 2 also became a blockbuster!  In fact, the film broke the record of highest first day grossing (19.21 crores) for a non-holiday release!  There is no doubt that Chulbul Pandey (played by Salman Khan) is a character that will go down in the history books of Indian cinema.

04 – Housefull 2 (182 crores net; 113 crore in India)

Like it’s predecessor, Housefull 2 also proved a huge success and became a Super Hit!  The multi-starrer featured Akshay Kumar, Asin, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ritesh Deshmukh, Zarine Khan, Shreyas Talpade, and Shazahn Padamsee.  It also featured Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Boman Irani, Mithun Chakraborty, and Chunky Pandey.  Initially the film received mixed reviews, but the positives outweighed the negatives to help catapult it to #4 on this list.

03 – Agneepath (193 crore net; 123 crore in India)

You hear the word “Agneepath” and the first image that is conjured is that of Amitabh Bachchan.  So, you can imagine just how much pressure was on the cast and crew of Agneepath to be on par with Bachchan’s earlier starrer.  The movie featured Hrithik Roshan as the lead, Sanjay Dutt as the villain Kancha Cheena, and Priyanka Chopra as Hrithik’s love interest.  Agneepath released under the Dharma Productions banner and quickly generated praise for Hrithik as the troubled Vijay Deenanath Chauhan.   The film even broke the record for highest opening day (it collected 21.76 crores) at the domestic box office, but was overtaken later by Ek Tha Tiger.  This movie is Hrithik’s first film and Priyanka’s second to cross the 100 crore mark.  It was the first film of the year to reach this exclusive club.

02 – Rowdy Rathore (201 crore net; 133 crore in India)

With Rowdy Rathore, Akshay Kumar proves again that he’s quite a talent!  It co-starred Sonakshi Sinha and was directed by the amazing dancer, Prabhudeva.  The movie was only made with a rather low budget of 40 crores, but went on to make 133 crore business at the domestic box office!  It broke the first day non-holiday record by collecting 16 crores at domestic Box Office.  Expectations were extremely low for this movie, but word of mouth truly helped it grow in popularity, and become a blockbuster!  The movie is Akshay’s second film to cross 100 crore in 2012!

01 – Ek Tha Tiger (307 crore net; 186 crore in India)

Although Kumar gave a strong fight at the box office, it was a Khan – Salman Khan – who gets the honor of having the best movie of 2012.  The past few years, Salman Khan has been seen in more action movies, which have proved very popular with audiences.  Released under the Yash Raj Films banner, Ek Tha Tiger saw him paired opposite his on-again/off-again real life love, Katrina Kaif.  There is no doubt the chemistry between these two is electric, and truly resonates with audiences!   There was absolutely nothing to complain about in this movie as the cast, songs, and storyline were all perfectly made!  So, it is no surprise that this movie landed at the top- far ahead of fellow films.  In fact, Ek Tha Tiger broke several records at the box office – netted 32.95 crore on opening day, had a record-setting opening weekend with a collection of 57.85 crore, and generated 143.25 crore in its extended week of nine days!  Not to mention, it is crossed the 100 crore mark in the quickest time – within just 6 days!  This broke the 7-days record previously held by Bodyguard (also a Salman Khan movie!)  The film went on to become the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in India after 3 Idiots, with it’s 307 crore worldwide net!  So, I’m sure we can all agree that Ek Tha Tiger deserves to roar at the top of the pack!

Here’s looking forward to Bollywood in 2013!  Be sure to join Urban Asian on our continued Bollywood journey!!

Almost made the list:

OMG: Oh My God! (83 crore in India)

These days, it seems that the Khans are getting very strong competition from a certain Kumar – Mr. Akshay Kumar!  Most of the projects he is in become major hits (except for Joker… but we won’t go there right now!).  So, it was no surprise that Oh My God! generated such good business at the box office.  The film was declared a super hit!  Akshay took on the avatar of God in the movie, where a shopkeeper takes God to court after his shop is destroyed by an earthquake!
