Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail’s mix of comedy, romance, drama, and action reminds you of that mystery mixed drink at a frat party -disproportionate and guaranteed to cause some fun havoc. The entire first half of the movie was non-stop jokes all making the theater burst out in laughter mainly because Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Boman Irani were 100% on with their timing and delivery. This is definitely a film that you can go with a friend or a date and enjoy yourselves; however, if you are looking to find a film with more depth than a sand box, this film won’t be worth your time. Don’t get me wrong, this film is filled with a wide array of emotions and will make you laugh and bring tears to your eyes but you probably will not have some life changing epiphany.
Saif Ali Khan really let loose in this film, and not because he was pantsless for a good portion of the film, but because he let out his inner shameless flirt and trust me when I say it is 150% as amusing as you think. While playing Gautam, Saif has proven that he may not have been dubbed King Khan, but he is no less an actor and entertainer than the other Khans. In fact, if I had to compare how entertaining he was in Cocktail with a previous performance, I would say that this was just as hysterical as his Filmfare hosting.
Deepika Padukone gave a fantastic performance that I really cannot say anything bad about. Her character as it was written is another story. She went from spoiled party girl, to nice girl, to really spoiled girl, to nice girl with absolutely no plot event or dialogue to signal some of these changes. She might have made a scene about a “bun in her oven,” but I smell a few awards in the making.
Diana Penty gave a pretty good debut performance and if she had been given the silver screen without having to share it with Deepika, she could have easily nabbed the Award for Best Debut Female. She was graceful and played the role of the traditional Indian girl with such ease that you would not believe that she is actually born in the UK. The character Meera was an ok character that was carried completely on Penty’s talent and not how the character was written. I am looking forward to see if Penty can get a hold of bigger and better roles given that she has to compete with Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, and a parade of new actresses.
