‘Teri Meri Kahaani‘ is a film which spans over 100 years or so following the love stories of two individuals who meet in three different lifetimes; 1910, 1960 and 2012.
We begin with Bombay in 1960 where struggling musician Govind (Shahid Kapoor) comes face to face with film heroine Rukhsar (Priyanka Chopra) through a chance meeting on a train. Neither is overly forward about the way they feel and the story hits a bumpy road as they discover there are not only two, but three people involved in this love story.
Fast forward to 2012 and we meet Krish (Shahid) and Radha (Priyanka) who accidentally bump into each other in Stratford-upon-Avon (the home of Shakespeare). Realizing they have an instant connection after spending the day together they keep in touch, as people do in the modern day, via Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. However modern-day girl Radha is less than impressed when she discovers that Krish started a relationship with her on the same day he broke up with his long-term girlfriend.
We are then transported to Sarghoda, Lahore in 1910 where womanizer Javed (Shahid) falls for the daughter of a Sikh freedom fighter named, Aradhana (Priyanka). Set against the backdrop of the British Raj the speed breaker in this relationship is Aradhana’s father who believes Javed to be a good-for-nothing ‘loafer’.
The first story has the most memorable moments, such as the first meeting between the two lovers where Rukhsar is holding a copy of Filmfare with her own photo on the front, in a whole train compartment that has been completely reserved for her. Priyanka looks beautiful in some gorgeous costumes designed by Manish Malhotra and Shahid’s styling by Kunal Rawal also works well. The setting also looks great and you enjoy watching Bombay from the 1960’s.
The story of Javed and Aradhna also works quite well, however at times you feel as if the story is making a mockery of the seriousness of the freedom fighters. There is some good and some bad ‘shayari’ that keeps the audience entertained as well as the inclusion of some great music (composed by Sajid-Wajid), including Allah Jaane. The song and dance routine in the jail ‘Humse Pyaar Kar Le Tu’ however, seems a little forced and unnecessary.
The least exciting story is the modern day 2012 story. It’s not gripping, not really new and aside from the good use of modern day technology, which makes it a bit more realistic, nothing else seem to work. The problem with each of the stories is the fact that they just run along nice and smoothly without any real problem. The script is the real weak factor for the film. Neha Sharma and Prachi Desai do well in their supporting roles and you can’t fault Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, they can’t make up for the fact that there is nothing to grip the audience.

The two leads share a great on-screen chemistry and the rumors of their on-and-off relationship should certainly hike some curiosity about the pair and lead people to the cinema halls.
Though Kunal Kohli can be credited for using a different style of film making, sadly no matter how good the packaging, if the product is no good the buyers won’t be impressed.
