Bollywood What's Happenin'

Toronto Plans to Honor the Legendary Raj Kapoor

And just when we think that the IIFA Awards are going to be just amazing, they get even better!

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is teaming up with IIFA to honor the Bollywood legend, Raj Kapoor. On June 26th, a special event will take place where the main members of the Kapoor family, including Kareena Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor, and Randhir Kapoor, will be present with other Bollywood stars in order to commemorate Mr. Kapoor.

To honor him even more, TIFF will also have ‘Raj Kapoor and the Golden Age of Indian Cinema Retrospective’ running in Toronto from July 1st to August 7th. TIFF mentioned that, “The highly influential Kapoor is revered throughout India, the former Soviet world, the Middle East and beyond for the films he made during the Golden Age of Indian cinema. Running from July 1 to August 7, TIFF presents the first major Kapoor retrospective in North America in nearly three decades – featuring a number of newly struck 35mm prints – and an exciting new installation from acclaimed filmmaker Srinivas Krishna.” The retrospective will feature his major films from the Golden Era such as his “directorial debut, ‘Aag’ (1949), his first mega-hit ‘Barsaat’ (1949), ‘Awaara’ (1961); record breaking ‘Sangam’ (1964) and major-hit ‘Bobby’ (1973).”

To top it off, the Kapoor’s will also be present when a predominantly Indian community near Toronto, Brampton, names a street after him, Raj Kapoor Crescent.
